On National Dog Day, we’d like to introduce you to ’s newest narcotics K-9, Magnum!

The 22-month-old red-nosed American Pit Bull was rescued from the streets of Oregon and brought to Multnomah Co. Animal Services by an Animal Control Officer. At the time, Magnum was severely underweight, but it quickly became clear he had the drive and determination to become a working K-9.

Master Trainer Terry Hartman, with Washington State Department of Corrections, was contacted by the Animal Control Officer to evaluate Magnum and see if he had what it takes to be a working dog. Within just three minutes of beginning the K-9 screening, it was clear Magnum had what it took.

While waiting for the next academy to start, Magnum was hungry and worked his way up to his correct weight of more than 80 pounds.

Magnum eventually made his way to the Department of Corrections K-9 Academy, where he was paired with Trooper Tolen of District 6 in Okanogan. From the beginning, Magnum’s incredible drive made one thing clear: he is not your average K-9.

“He is big and strong, and nothing gets between him and the ball!” Trooper Tolen said. During training, the team affectionately referred to Magnum’s high-energy workouts as “pit bull aerobics.”

Now trained to detect he**in, co***ne, methamphetamine, and fentanyl, Magnum is ready to put his skills to work protecting the communities of Washington.

Magnum is WSP’s first new narcotics K-9 in approximately six years.
