It’s National Library Card Sign-Up Month, and did you know a simple library card can get you much more than books? One amazing feature you get with a library card is access to the "Library of Things" that is perfect for finding supplies for your next neighborhood gathering.

In this video, we’re gearing up for a Fresh Air Connections block party with help from the Newton Public Library and Harvey County D-FY who have pre-stocked Block Party Kit and cooler available for any type of gathering! Holiday trash reminder!

Because of the Labor Day holiday tomorrow, 9.7.2026:

-Monday’s trash route → picked up Tuesday
-Tuesday’s trash route → picked up Wednesday

Helpful tips:
• Set it out the night before if you can- 5 p.m. or after and by 7 a.m. the day of
• Face cart toward the street (handle in the back)
• Leave 3 feet between carts and other objects
• Remove from the curb within 24 hours after pickup
• Help inform us of issues by reporting a concern: www.newtonkansas.com/report

***Last day for the Splash Park is tomorrow!!!***

The end of summer is sneaking up on us, which means it’s almost time to say goodbye to the Spring Lake Splash Park for the season!

-Last full day open: Monday, September 7
-Come enjoy those final splash park adventures before we close for the season!

The Splash Park will be fully closed for the season beginning Tuesday, September 8.

So grab the swimsuits, round up the kids and squeeze in one last day of splashing, playing and making those summer memories!

Newton was proud to host the 2-day Fall 2026 conference of the Administrative Assistants of Kansas Cities (AAKC) this week- full of good info, great connections, and even some laughs!

The conference brought administrative professionals from cities and counties across Kansas together for training, networking, and sharing ideas that help strengthen local government and the communities we serve.

A special shoutout to our own Aubrey Wallace, who coordinated and put together this year’s Fall AAKC conference. Her work helped create a great opportunity for fellow municipal professionals to connect while also showcasing a little of what makes Newton special.

We’re glad to have welcomed AAKC members to Newton and to be part of a statewide network dedicated to learning, collaboration, and better public service.

Newton is home to more than just people and pets. We share our community with all kinds of wildlife, from deer and foxes to raccoons, opossums, skunks and plenty of other creatures that call Newton home, too.

So, what happens when wildlife wanders into your neighborhood?

The primary role of Newton’s Animal Control Officer Lyndsey Robinette, is supporting domesticated animals and their owners, including helping with lost pets, animal welfare concerns and other issues involving pets in our community.

When it comes to wildlife, the Animal Control Officer may become involved when an animal is sick or badly injured, or when it poses a danger to people.

But if a healthy wild animal simply happens to be hanging out in your yard or neighborhood, that’s usually just wildlife doing what wildlife does. If you are able to leave it be, go ahead and let it be. In other situations, residents are encouraged to contact a pest control company or the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) Wichita Regional Office for guidance at 316-683-8069.

National Wildlife Day is a great reminder that wildlife is an important part of our community and sometimes, the best thing we can do is give them a little space.

Last week, we asked our community to share photos of the wildlife they’ve spotted at Rhoades Wetlands to showcase today in celebration of National Wildlife Day- and wow is all we can say!

Take a look through these collages and see Rhoades Wetlands through our community members’ lenses. These photos are a great reminder of the incredible variety of life right here in our own backyard.

Last week’s Transportation Safety Action Plan open houses gave community members an opportunity to review transportation data, learn about proposed improvements, ask questions, and share ideas for making it safer to get around Newton and Harvey County.

Community input gathered during the open houses will help shape the draft plan, which will be available for review later this fall. Another round of community engagement is tentatively planned for October, with the goal of bringing a final plan to the City and County Commissions for approval by the end of the year.

We appreciate everyone who took part and helped move this important work forward. Stay tuned for opportunities to review the draft plan and provide additional input!

September: Responsible Pet Owner Month

Our pets are family, and keeping them safe and healthy is a big part of caring for our community. Newton, KS Police Department Animal Control Officer Lyndsey Robinette works closely with Caring Hands Humane Society to provide education, resources and support for pet owners- from helping reunite lost pets with their families to investigating animal cruelty cases and helping keep our neighborhoods safe.
