⚠️PARK ALERT⚠️

We are sorry to report that Gargantua Road will remain closed for the remainder of the 2026 operating season. Unfortunately, it has been determined that completing the repairs needed to both the bridge over Slievert Creek and the washout along the road will not be feasible this year.

Due to this closure, the following backcountry access points along Gargantua Road will remain inaccessible for the remainder of the season:
- Belanger Lake
- Gargantua Lake
- Miron Lake
- Buckshot Lake
- Gargantua Bay

Hiking campsites in the following Coastal Trail zones will also remain closed:
- Chalfant Cove
- Chair Island
- Warp Bay
- Gargantua North
- Gargantua South
- Rhyolite Cove
- Mermaid Lagoon

All of the campsites along the Coastal Trail designated for paddling remain open.

Reservation holders have been contacted and offered a full refund or the opportunity to rebook an alternative route at no additional cost.

Hikers interested in camping in any of the closed Coastal Trail zones by accessing the sites from an alternative access point may call the park to inquire about booking.

Please note that the road closed to all vehicle traffic, bicycles, and pedestrians.

We understand this closure is very disappointing for many and we apologize sincerely for any inconvenience. We are optimistic that the road will reopen for the 2027 season.

If you have further questions or require assistance planning alternative routes, please don’t hesitate to call us at the park anytime during business hours, 8:00 am - 7:00 pm daily: 705-856-2284.

⚠️PARK ALERT⚠️

We are sorry to report that the closure of Gargantua Road has been further extended due to a bridge failure over Slievert Creek, 2km from the start of the road. As a result, progress towards repairing the washout along the road has been stalled and the entire road is now closed. Unfortunately, we do not have an anticipated reopening date to share at this time.

Due to this closure, the following backcountry access points along Gargantua Road will not be accessible until further notice:
- Belanger Lake
- Gargantua Lake
- Miron Lake
- Buckshot Lake
- Gargantua Bay

Campsites in the following Coastal Trail zones will also be temporarily closed:
- Chalfant Cove
- Chair Island
- Warp Bay
- Gargantua North
- Gargantua South
- Rhyolite Cove
- Mermaid Lagoon

We apologize sincerely for any inconvenience.

If you have further questions or require assistance planning alternative routes, please don’t hesitate to call us at the park anytime during business hours, 8:00 am - 7:00 pm daily: 705-856-2284.

Stay tuned for updates.

⚠️PARK ALERT⚠️

We know you're eager to get out there, but unfortunately, due to continued snow and ice coverage, Lake Superior Provincial Park has further delayed the opening of the backcountry. The anticipated opening date is now May 22nd, 2026.

All affected campsite reservation holders will be contacted and offered a full refund or the opportunity to change their reservation without any penalty.

We are monitoring conditions daily and will open the backcountry as soon as it is safe to do so.

Day-use hiking trails will be officially open as of May 15th, 2026. Hikers should be aware that initial trail maintenance is ongoing and be prepared for mixed trail conditions (wet and muddy areas, snow and ice).

Check back for updates.
