My thoughts are with the family of Trooper Kevin Trainor and the members of the Massachusetts State Police during this very difficult time. Trooper Trainor died a hero, and will be remembered for his selfless actions of putting his life on the line to ensure other innocent drivers were not harmed. May his soul rest in peace, and may we not take for granted the dangers that our first responders face every day in their jobs to protect all of us.

I am pleased to share that the funds for the FY 2026 Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant have been awarded to local fire departments, including the Canton Fire Department. Canton received the $12,517 that was applied for. This funding will be used here and across the Commonwealth to purchase a wide variety of equipment that will make impactful improvements to the safety of our firefighters. Many fire departments will buy new protective gear, thermal imaging cameras, hazardous gas detectors, and personnel accountability systems. I am grateful that the Legislature and Healey-Driscoll Administration could work together to continue this important program.

Last week, the Massachusetts House of Representatives voted to pass crucial energy affordability legislation that would result in over $9 billion in savings for utility ratepayers over the next 10 years.

This bill reduces the Mass Save marketing, advertising and administrative budget by $1 billion for immediate ratepayer savings, returns 70 percent of Alternative Compliance Payments (fees paid by energy suppliers for not meeting renewable energy standards) to ratepayers, and addresses predatory practices by certain suppliers.

H.5151 targets the energy affordability crisis without compromising environmental impact. The House bill requires DOER to establish a state-led offshore wind pre-development and project acceleration program, removes barriers for nuclear energy by repealing chapter 503 of the acts of 1982, and allows for smart solar permitting to get more projects online faster, among other initiatives.

The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
