Happy ! Today, we celebrate the news of the Emancipation Proclamation reaching the last enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas. Over 160 years later, we honor all those who fought for freedom and remember that the fight for a just society continues. I was proud to vote to make Juneteenth a state holiday and to see it become a federal holiday thereafter.

Melrose Street/Lynn Fells Parkway intersection Project update! I, along with City of Melrose - City Government, have worked to support and advance the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation's efforts to deliver a safer intersection with new traffic signals, ADA-compliant ramps, and curb extension throughout my time as the State Rep. I’m thrilled that this project was completed during this school year! This month, after hearing from residents, I asked DCR to review the signal timing to ensure there is safe and timely passage for vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians. DCR's engineering group visited the location last week and determined adjustments to be made to the traffic signal detection technology. These adjustments, including enabling the pedestrian detection, should improve both the vehicle wait times and the crossing countdown for pedestrians in the crosswalk. The necessary contractor has been contacted, and the adjustments are projected to have a turnaround time of 4-6 weeks. I will continue to press DCR to ensure needed safety infrastructure and parkway projects are completed to make the safest it can be.

Last week, I joined the House to pass a $228 million supplemental budget to address time sensitive budget deficiencies. This supplemental budget includes key investments across a number of important sectors. With recent memories of Memorial Day Weekend, I’m proud to expand veterans’ access to bonuses so that we fully support those that have served our country. And as a public school parent and former teacher, I underscore the importance of expanding state grant authorization limits for local school construction projects, reflecting higher costs, to provide students with the learning environments they deserve. Thank you to Speaker Mariano and Chair Michlewitz for your leadership on this legislation.

Yesterday, I attended and spoke at the Wakefield MA Fire Department Wakefield Firefighters' Relief Association Memorial Sunday Ceremony. This annual event honors the Wakefield firefighters who no longer are with us, including those who lost their lives in service to their community. It was an honor to remember those who embodied selflessness, courage, and an unwavering dedication to others and to share my appreciation for our current firefighters and their families. Thank you to all firefighters for keeping our community safe.
