The March publication provides updated information related to the overall Korea’s economy including Investor Relations meeting in London, expert roundtable on social mobility, ministerial meeting on international economic affairs, carbon free energy initiative roundtable.

[Overview]
✔️ In December, industrial production, services production and facility investment increased while retail sales and construction investment decreased. In January, job growth expanded and inflation slowed down.
✔️ Recently, inflation has shown signs of moderating, while the Korean economy’s recovery continues to gain traction mainly driven by increases in manufacturing production and exports. However, the pace of recovery differs across economic sectors, amid weak private consumption and visible signs of a slowdown in construction investment.

KDI Economic Outlook Update 2024.02
The Korean economy exhibiting signs of a decelerating downturn

In 2024, the Korean economy is anticipated to achieve a growth rate of 2.2%, consistent with KDI’s earlier expectations made last November. This stability arises from subdued domestic demand marked by decelerating consumption and investment, while exports continue their recovery.

Projected headline inflation stands at 2.5%, slightly lower than the initial forecast of 2.6%, mirroring the slowdown in domestic demand growth. Despite this slowdown, employment is forecasted to increase by 220,000 individuals, aligning closely with the previous estimate of 210,000. This growth reflects a rising labor force participation among women in their 30s and the elderly.

KDI Journal of Economic Policy
The KDI JEP is a refereed journal which is published quarterly. First published in 1979, the KDI JEP brought to light mainly economic development issues pertaining to Korea, though in 2015, the scope was broadened to encompass global socioeconomic development issues in order to promote exchanges of research findings with prominent scholars both at home and abroad.

The KDI JEP requires no submission fee and provides professional English editing services as well as an honorarium for published papers.

Working women in their 30s: what has changed?

South Korea is witnessing a significant rise in the labor participation rate of women in their 30s since the 2010s. Traditionally, women in their 30s have lower participation rates due to childbirth and child-rearing. However, this trend is shifting as more women in their early 30s are entering the workforce. This trend is associated with delayed marriage and childbirth, shifting the lowest point in the M-shaped curve of female labor force participation from the early to the late 30s.

According to the research findings, women born between 1988 and 1992 exhibit a higher labor force participation rate but a lower rate of having children compared to previous generations. The analysis also reveals that having children has historically hindered the economic engagement of women in their 30s, although this hindrance is diminishing in recent generations.

The rising labor force participation of women in their 30s is driven by fewer of them having children in this age group, helping to counteract a shrinking working-age population. However, this trend combined with declining birth rates poses long-term economic and societal challenges.

To address these challenges, sustained policy support for work-family balance is crucial, including implementing reduced work hours during child-rearing and flexible work arrangements. Additionally, it's essential to create high-quality job opportunities for younger adults to boost their economic engagement and offset these demographic challenges.

[Dialogue on the North Korean Economy] International Humanitarian Aid to North Korea: Progress, Results, and Controversy

The December series of the "Dialogue on the North Korean Economy" features an interview with one of the leading scholars in the field, Professor Hazel Smith (Advisory Fellow at KDI).

In reviewing the overall history of humanitarian assistance provided to North Korea over the last 25 years, Smith stipulates that North Korea received at least a billion dollars worth of humanitarian assistance between 1998 and 2004 but received next to nothing in 2021 and 2022.

Smith addresses the significant question of what differentiates aid to North Korea from aid given to other underdeveloped countries and goes on to discuss the distinctive features of aid to North Korea provided by South Korea.

In conclusion, Smith emphasizes the essence of humanitarian aid, which is to save lives and alleviate suffering in the short term, regardless of the actions of governments. According to Smith, it is contrary to international law to deny humanitarian assistance and would only result in the premature death of the most vulnerable, especially children and the frail elderly.

‘KDI-WB Capacity Building and Training Program: Strengthening Digital Skills in East Asia and Pacific’ successfully concluded

KDI, in collaboration with the World Bank, recently hosted a capacity-building and training program aimed at strengthening digital skills. The program sought to share Korea's expertise in digital transformation and education with three selected countries in the East Asia and Pacific region (Indonesia, Mongolia, and the Philippines) through seminars, site visits, and workshops focused on digital infrastructure, policy establishment, and digital education.

2023 GKEDC-Saudi Arabia-Algeria-Kuwait Capacity-Building Workshop on Promotion of Startup/SMEs

The capacity-building workshop, held last November, aimed to address the need for promoting innovative startups and SMEs in the era of digital transformation and during the global supply chain crisis. Over the course of five days, it convened government officials and private sector participants from Saudi Arabia, Algeria, and Kuwait, with the goal of enhancing their capacity to implement national policies aimed at diversifying industries and fostering high-value-added businesses.
