After weeks of hearings, discussion, and consideration, the City Council unanimously adopted the 2026-2027 budget for the City of Lansing.
This budget puts more officers on the streets by adding detention staff to the jail, funds six additional police positions through state revenue sharing and the COPS grant, and adds one firefighter to every shift. It invests $1.5 million in sidewalk repairs, expands road paving, and continues the infrastructure work separating our combined sewers to protect Lansing’s rivers. On violence prevention, it funds Advance Peace at $325,000, directs $100,000 to the Lansing Empowerment Network, and keeps the Violence Prevention Coordinator in place. And it strengthens day-to-day services — two more 311 call center staff, two additional Code Compliance officers, and two new Solid Waste operators to improve trash and recycling collection.
The budget that I introduced earlier this year addresses priorities for Lansing residents, including increased funding for local roads and sidewalks, additional police officers and fire fighters, code enforcement and neighborhoods, housing and homelessness resources, and assisting small businesses. And I am proud that it is balanced and fiscally responsible. I want to thank the City Council for their review and due diligence on the budget and their overwhelming support for the plan I presented to them. I am excited for the investments we continue to make together in Lansing for the next fiscal year, starting on July 1.
