Although the Emancipation Proclamation took effect on January 1, 1863, more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas did not learn of their freedom until June 19, 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston and announced their emancipation. This historic day became known as Juneteenth.

In recognition, the Chester County Historic Courtouse will be lit in red this evening.

Chester County offices and courts are closed today in observance.

Notice: Chambers Lake will be temporarily closed from 8:30 pm on June 17th through part of the afternoon on June 18th. Licensed professionals are applying targeted aquatic herbicide treatments to address invasive plant species. The lake will reopen later the same day once the application has been completed on the 18th.

Following the applications, the lake will be safe for regularly permitted recreational activities, such as boating and fishing, and there are no fish consumption restrictions. There will be two additional treatments with similar closures required, approximately every three weeks, depending on the weather. Additional advance notifications will be communicated on social media and our website.

Please visit Chester County Water Resources Authority's page for more information about the treatment process and Chambers Lake's status: https://ow.ly/UYlv50ZbUIB

From the original flag of thirteen alternating red and white stripes and thirteen white stars on a blue field to today’s flag of fifty stars and thirteen stripes, we celebrate the enduring legacy of our nation’s symbol.

One of the first signs of heat illness is muscle cramps, so if you start cramping up it's time to act:

— Get someplace cooler, stat ☃️
— Remove excess clothing 👋
— Drink a cool sports drink 🧃
— Avoid caffeine/alcohol 🚫🍸

Seek medical help if your cramps don't go away in an hour, you have heart problems, or you are on a low-sodium diet.
