On Tuesday, August 4th, I had the pleasure of administrating the Oath of Office to Senator Zack Taylor. Senator Taylor won an unopposed special election for Senate District 28. As you can see, the Senate Chambers is currently under construction, we had a second ceremony in Room 230 of the Capitol. It was great having Lt. Governor Matt Pinnell and President Pro Tempore Greg Treat at the ceremony along with Senator Taylor’s wife and daughter. Congratulations Senator!

On November 6, Oklahoma voters will be asked to decide whether to retain certain judges. Linked below is a fascinating Tulsa World editorial detailing the independence of our judiciary and a recommendation that Oklahomans vote to retain all appellate judges.

There have been decisions from Oklahoma appellate court that we wish had gone a different way, although those are the minority. More important, is the fact that we have never

On November 6, 2018, voters throughout Oklahoma will vote in the general election. Part of the ballot will include the names of 12 appellate judges. Appellate judges are identified by name, not by political party. These judges have been previously screened by the Judicial Nominating Commission made up by citizens from around the state and appointed to office by an Oklahoma Governor. This portion of the ballot is known as the retention ballot. Voters are asked to vote yes or no. A yes vote will permit the named appellate judge to remain in office. The named appellate judge must receive a majority of yes votes statewide to remain in office.

Do you know a young adult or someone who soon will be? If you know students, parents, teachers, or administrators who could use the app, it can be found by searching for “OBA Young Adult Guide” in the App Store and Google Play.

In prior years, the Oklahoma Bar Association Young Lawyers Division has taken an active role in educating high school students in their transition into adulthood and the legal matters they will face. The division worked with the Law-Related Education Committee to publish a young adult legal guide titled “You’re 18 Now – It’s Your Responsibility!” that was also offered as an app.

In 2017, the Young Lawyers Division undertook the task of updating the guide’s content and making it available as a new and improved mobile app. As an app, the association has greater access to updating the information at a fraction of the cost.
