How can management evolve from emergency response into a strategic tool for territorial planning and ?

This challenge lies at the core of the collaboration between AICS Tirana and CIMA Research Foundation in . Through the for Forests – Sustainable Forest Management in Albania programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo in partnership with United Nations Development Programme - UNDP, we are supporting a science-based approach that combines wildfire risk assessment, climate projections, early warning systems and forest planning to strengthen resilience and sustainable forest management.

As climate change increases the frequency and intensity of droughts and extreme events, understanding future wildfire risk is becoming essential for protecting ecosystems, communities and local economies.

These topics were discussed at the SmartAgri&SuSY 2026 International Conference, held in Tirana from 7 to 10 June and organized by the Università di Genova and the Universiteti Politeknik i Tiranës, bringing together researchers, institutions and practitioners working towards more sustainable and resilient systems.

During the conference, Miranda Deda Kalaja, Director of the Albanian Branch of CIMA Research Foundation, and Giovanni Timiliero, project coordinator of AICS Tirana, shared perspectives on how scientific knowledge, institutional cooperation and innovative risk assessment tools can support Albania's climate adaptation pathway and alignment with European standards.

4th Steering Committee reviews progress and confirms next priorities for the Bylis–Klos Archaeological Park

On 5 June 2026, representatives of the European Union Delegation to Albania, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports, the Municipality of Mallakastër, AICS Tirana and project partners gathered at the Archaeological Park of Bylis for the 4th Steering Committee Meeting of the project “EU for Economic Development – Tourism-led Local Economic Development with a Focus on Cultural Heritage.”

The meeting provided an opportunity to review the progress achieved since the previous Steering Committee and to discuss the next strategic steps for project implementation. Participants highlighted that the results of the initiative are becoming increasingly tangible, beginning with the establishment of the Bylis–Klos Archaeological Park and the approval of its management and administrative framework. Additional milestones include the approval of the Conservation Plan, the implementation of local development grants supporting community-based initiatives, and the advancement of strategic investments aimed at strengthening the protection, management and valorisation of the archaeological park.

Prior to the Steering Committee, participants visited the ongoing Scuola Cantiere, implemented in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI) and the University of Tirana under the project’s capacity-building programme for the development of local professional expertise in cultural heritage management, conservation and valorisation. The initiative is designed to strengthen the capacities of Albanian institutions and professionals working in the heritage sector, including staff from archaeological parks, Regional Directorates of Cultural Heritage, the National Institute of Cultural Heritage (IKTK), other public institutions, as well as students and young specialists. Through practical conservation activities carried out directly on the archaeological site, participants gain hands-on experience while contributing to the safeguarding of the Bylis archaeological landscape.

The visit also included a meeting with local tourist guides who successfully completed the training and certification programme supported by the project and certified by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports. The initiative has strengthened local capacities, improved the quality of visitor services, and created new opportunities for the sustainable development of cultural tourism in the Bylis area.

The Steering Committee acknowledged the significant progress achieved across all project components and confirmed the next implementation priorities. In the coming weeks, conservation works at the Archaeological Park of Bylis and Klos are expected to commence, alongside the implementation of tourism infrastructure interventions and the construction of the Multifunctional Centre. This strategic investment will enhance visitor services, educational activities, cultural programming and local economic opportunities, further contributing to the sustainable development and promotion of the archaeological park and its surrounding communities.

• Community Support: Empowering local small businesses and tourism entrepreneurs through targeted education and grants;

• Youth Energy: Empowering young people to use digital tools and multimedia content to drive environmental awareness and become ambassadors for our natural beauty.

Culture and Creativity in the Balkans remain at the core of AICS Tirana’s Action

A delegation from AICS Tirana, led by Acting Head of Office Letizia Fischioni, took part in the CIM Forum (Creative Industries & Media Festival) in Montenegro from 28 to 30 May, contributing to the networking event organized within the framework of the regional project “Culture & Creativity for the Western Balkans”, funded by the European Union and implemented in partnership with UNESCO and the British Council.

Interactive sessions and panel discussions provided implementing partners and beneficiaries with the opportunity to engage with a diverse audience involved in the debate on the development of the creative sector in the Balkans. Together, they explored key issues related to the opportunities and challenges that creative industries face daily across the region.

Among the panelists was Iris Canaj, one of the grantees selected under the component managed by AICS Tirana. Through the support received from CC4WBs, her initiative, Creative Art Residency (CAR) in Tirana, was able to transform a former space on the outskirts of the city, in Vaqarr, into a creative hub where artists from different backgrounds can take part in artistic residencies and present their work to the local community at the end of the Programme.

In her opening remarks, Acting Head of AICS Tirana Letizia Fischioni reflected on the impact and significance of the project in this context:
“Culture and creativity are not peripheral but central to processes of reconciliation, good neighbourly relations, and support for the European aspirations of the Western Balkans. Culture is a bridge that connects people beyond geographical borders; it is a means of economic and human development, as well as a powerful driver of innovation, social cohesion, and sustainable growth.
Looking to the future, we encourage the continuation of this initiative with the valuable support of the European Union, to ensure that culture and creativity remain at the heart of regional cooperation.”

🇮🇹🤝🇷🇸 Importanti progressi per l’adeguamento del mercato interno serbo agli standard richiesti dall’Unione Europea

Belgrado, 28 Maggio 2026_Si è concluso poche ore fa lo Steering Committee (Comitato di Pilotaggio) del progetto “EU 4 Internal Market”, finanziato dall’ EU u Srbiji - Delegazione dell'Unione Europea in Serbia e realizzato da Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo attraverso Agenzia Dogane e Monopoli-ADM ed in partnership con FIAP e SlovakAid.

✅ Concreti e significativi i risultati raggiunti da "EU4IM", che riguardano principalmente due aspetti:
- Il rafforzamento del quadro legislativo in materia di sorveglianza del mercato, sicurezza dei prodotti e tracciabilità digitale, introducendo un approccio moderno basato sul rischio e rafforzando i poteri di ispezione;
- I progressi riscontrati nel percorso di adesione della Serbia all’ACAA, l’Accordo sulla valutazione della conformità e sull'accettazione dei prodotti industriali, che stabilisce procedure per la valutazione della conformità e l'accettazione dei prodotti industriali, assicurando che siano conformi alle normative europee.

✅ Il Comitato ha inoltre certificato il potenziamento delle infrastrutture di mercato, in termini di hardware e software a supporto del Portale delle informazioni sui prodotti e dati sull'infrastruttura di qualità, creando le condizioni per un sistema più moderno, efficiente e allineato agli standard europei.

👏 Un plauso è stato rivolto alle istituzioni beneficiarie (Ministero del Commercio Interno ed Estero della Repubblica di Serbia; Ministero dell'Economia - Infrastrutture di Qualità; Commissione per il Controllo degli Aiuti di Stato; Commissione per la Tutela della Concorrenza; Ufficio della Proprietà Intellettuale), che stanno dimostrando grande apertura, flessibilità e capacità di adattamento, con spirito di collaborazione e visione comune.

🤝 Infine, il Comitato ha approvato l'estensione del progetto e accolto l'apertura della collaborazione con l'OCSE, che sarà integrata come nuovo partner esecutivo con l’obiettivo di condurre uno studio analitico sull'impatto economico della contraffazione e della pirateria per l'Ufficio della proprietà intellettuale, un significativo rafforzamento multilaterale dell’iniziativa.

Iris Canaj, do të jetë pjesë e një paneli diskutimi të fokusuar në mentoring, networking dhe mbledhjen e të dhënave në sektorin krijues dhe kulturor.

We are honored to participate to the upcoming CIM forum in Kotor, in the framework of Culture and Creativity for the Western Balkans project, funded by the European Union. La Sede AICS di Tirana esprime il più profondo cordoglio per la tragica scomparsa di Monica Montefalcone, docente associata di Ecologia e di Muriel Oddenino, assegnista di ricerca.

Le due biologhe marine, affiliate al Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra, dell’Ambiente e della Vita – DISTAV dell'Università di Genova, collaboravano con la Sede nell'ambito del progetto a finanziamento europeo "EU 4 Nature", nel quale erano coinvolte nella realizzazione di interventi di ripristino dell'ecosistema marino presso la località costiera di Porto Palermo, nello specifico occupandosi di studio e installazione di Posidonia Oceanica.

Ai loro familiari, colleghi, amici e a quelli delle altre persone scomparse nella tragedia delle Maldive va la solidarietà e il supporto della Sede e dell’Agenzia tutta.
