Indigenous Wisdom and Ecological Stewardship: A Kirat Perspective on Ecological Healing

Good afternoon, respected organizers, distinguished faith leaders, elders, and dear friends.

Sewaro!

Warm greetings to you all from Nepal.
My name is Mangmingsohang Lingden, and I am deeply honoured to participate in this Roundtable as a representative of the Kirat Indigenous Religion.
We have gathered here because we share one common concern: our common home is under increasing pressure. Biodiversity is declining, the climate is changing, and communities across Asia are facing growing environmental challenges. These are not only scientific or economic issues—they are also moral and spiritual challenges. They call us to rediscover how humanity should live in harmony with the Earth.
The Kirat tradition offers one simple yet profound answer:
“Nature is not something we own; nature is a sacred relationship to which we belong.”

This understanding comes from the Mundhum, the sacred wisdom of the Kirat people, preserved through generations as a living oral tradition and today also preserved in written form.
According to the Mundhum, all life is sustained through the harmony of the five elements—sky, air, fire, water, and earth. When these five elements remain in balance, life flourishes. When that balance is disturbed, nature responds through droughts, floods, landslides, earthquakes, storms, pandemics, and other natural disasters.

For us, ecological balance is not merely an environmental concern—it is a sacred spiritual responsibility.
The Mundhum teaches us to honour the whole of creation. We pray for the Himalayas, hills, forests, rivers, lakes, stones, flowers, trees, the sun, the moon, the stars, and the universe itself. They are not merely natural resources; they are sacred gifts of the Creator. Caring for them is, therefore, an act of faith.
For generations, this worldview has shaped the traditional ecological knowledge of the Kirat people. Long before the modern language of biodiversity conservation, our ancestors understood that protecting forests, water sources, fertile land, wildlife, and the natural cycles of the seasons was essential for the well-being of both humanity and the Earth.
This wisdom is lived through our two major seasonal festivals: Ubhauli and Udhauli.
Ubhauli marks the movement of birds and animals from the warmer lowlands to the cooler highlands and the beginning of the planting season. Before sowing seeds, farmers worship the Earth, praying for fertile soil, favourable weather, and protection from floods, landslides, and other natural disasters. It reminds us that farming is not merely about producing food—it is about living in partnership with nature.

Udhauli marks the harvest season and the movement from the colder mountains to the warmer valleys. It is our festival of thanksgiving to Mother Earth. Before anyone consumes the new harvest, the first grains are offered to the Creator. We also ask forgiveness from nature for the insects, plants, and other living beings that may have been unintentionally harmed during cultivation. This teaches humility, gratitude, and respect for every form of life.
Our National Luminary, Mahaguru Phalgunanda Lingden, urged us never to neglect Ubhauli and Udhauli. He taught that when there is excessive heat, we should pray for rain, and when there is excessive rain, we should pray for sunshine. His message reminds us that whenever nature loses its balance, humanity must strive to restore it. He also established the sacred prayer site at the base of Phaktanglung (Kumbhakarna) and invited people to gather there every year in prayer, reminding us that all living beings are children of the Creator.
Continuing this living tradition, Kirat dharma guru Atmananda Lingden 'Seing' reminds us:
“The Earth needs healing because it is our home. If we fail to protect our home, our own existence loses its meaning.”
He teaches that war, development that disregards ecological, cultural, and spiritual values, the excessive use of chemical pesticides, and unsustainable lifestyles are making the Earth sick. He further teaches that the Mundhum preserves the spiritual wisdom needed to heal the Earth by calling humanity back to balance, gratitude, responsibility, and harmony with all creation.
Science helps us understand environmental problems.
Technology provides many practical solutions.
Faith and Indigenous wisdom help us answer an equally important question:
How should we live with the Earth?
From the Kirat perspective, biodiversity, climate, and energy cannot be separated. Development is necessary, but it should never destroy the sacred relationships that sustain life. Energy transitions should respect rivers, forests, mountains, biodiversity, and the cultures and spiritual traditions of Indigenous and local communities. True progress is measured not only by economic growth but also by the well-being of people, nature, and future generations.
Perhaps the greatest contribution that Indigenous wisdom can offer our world today is this:
Replace exploitation with stewardship.
Replace greed with gratitude.
Replace domination with harmony.
This is the enduring message of the Mundhum, and I believe it is a message our world needs today.
Although we come from different faiths and cultures, we share one Earth and one responsibility. Guided by the shared aspiration of World Peace and Human Unity, let us continue to learn from one another, strengthen our collaboration, and work together to protect biodiversity, respond to climate change, promote a just energy transition, and leave a healthier planet for present and future generations.
May our dialogue at this Roundtable inspire lasting partnerships and meaningful action for the healing of our common home.
Nogen. Sewaro.
Thank you very much.
