When security companies work together, share information and coordinate their response, we can make a real difference in the fight against crime. This incident highlights the value of cooperation between Sentry Fire & Security, Sentry Safebay Control Room and Citywide Response in detecting suspicious activity and ensuring that swift action is taken.
🚨 CABLE THEFT INCIDENT | 23 OCTOBER 2026
In the early hours of this morning, Sentry’s monitored AI cameras detected approximately 10 suspects opening a manhole and removing what appeared to be underground cables.
Sentry Safebay Control Room immediately notified Citywide Response and advised that SAPS also be contacted due to the number of suspects involved.
When Citywide Response arrived, the suspects fled the scene. However, Citywide Response successfully located and detained one suspect who was found hiding nearby. The suspect was subsequently handed over to SAPS.
A substantial quantity of cables was found at the scene, and SAPS took over for further investigation.
⚠️ CABLE THEFT SYNDICATES: A HUGE ONGOING PROBLEM
Cable theft remains a serious and ongoing concern, with suspected organised syndicates targeting essential infrastructure. These crimes extend far beyond the theft of cables and can cause extensive damage to public infrastructure, disrupt essential services, create costly repairs and ultimately affect businesses, residents and entire communities.
The damage caused by these incidents places an unnecessary financial burden on service providers and the public, while the disruption can have far-reaching consequences for everyone who depends on these services.
Fighting this crime requires a united effort. AI camera monitoring, proactive surveillance, rapid response, information sharing and cooperation with SAPS are essential tools in identifying suspicious activity and helping protect our infrastructure.
