The Chairperson of the South African Youth Council delivered the purpose of the day during the Civic Education Drive, highlighting the importance of voter education and active participation in democratic processes.

The Chairperson emphasised that voting is not only a constitutional right but also a powerful tool for young people to influence decision-making and drive meaningful social and economic change within their communities.

Young people were
encouraged to register to vote and participate in elections as a way of shaping responsive, accountable and inclusive local government.

Furthermore, the Chairperson stressed the importance of increasing youth visibility and representation in governance structures, noting that young people must move beyond being observers to becoming active participants in leadership, policy development and community decision-making. The message was clear: the future of local democracy depends on the meaningful participation of young people, whose voices, ideas and leadership are essential in building prosperous, inclusive and sustainable communities.

Amathole District Municipality in collaboration with the South African Youth Council will host a Civic Education Drive at the University of Fort Hare, Alice Campus, within the Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality, on 29 July 2026 at 10H00.

Held under the theme:
“Empowering Youth to Shape the Future of Local Democracy”
The programme seeks to create a meaningful platform for young people to engage critically on democracy, civic participation, leadership and the role of youth in shaping the future of our country.

The Civic Education Drive will focus on three key topics:
TOPIC 1: YOUNG PEOPLE AND VOTER REGISTRATION – EVERY VOICE COUNTS
Addressing voter apathy and exploring the critical role of young people in shaping accountable, responsive and democratic government.
TOPIC 2: GENDER EQUALITY IN LEADERSHIP – BUILDING EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN AND MEN ALIKE
Challenging rigid gender stereotypes and advancing inclusive leadership models that create equal opportunities for all.
TOPIC 3: THE YOUTH DILEMMA – DOES THE CONSTITUTION, A DOCUMENT DRAFTED IN 1996, TRULY REFLECT THE DIGITAL, ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL ANXIETIES OF GENERATION Z AND ALPHA IN 2026?

A critical conversation on whether our constitutional framework adequately responds to the realities, aspirations and challenges confronting today's young people in an increasingly digital, economically challenging and socially complex society.

SAYC believes that young people must not only be participants in democracy but active shapers of its future. Through civic education, meaningful dialogue and active citizenship, we can empower a generation that understands its rights, embraces its responsibilities and contributes towards building a more inclusive, accountable and responsive local democracy.

Today, the South African Youth Council Amathole District was honoured to participate in the International Nelson Mandela Day 67 Minutes Campaign at Dalubuhle High School in Sheshegu.

This initiative was a collaborative effort between ASPIRE, the Executive Mayor of Amathole District Municipality, and the SAYC, united by the spirit of selfless service and community development.

Representing the SAYC was our Regional Chairperson, who joined partners and volunteers in giving back to the school community. Together, we renovated the school hall to create a conducive environment for learners as they prepare for the upcoming trial examinations and the 2026 National Senior Certificate examinations. We also painted classrooms and established a vegetable garden that will contribute towards food security and support the school community.

Nelson Mandela reminded us that "what counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived, but what difference we have made to the lives of others." Today, we honoured that legacy through action, demonstrating that when government, civil society, and young people work together, meaningful change is possible.

The SAYC remains committed to building active citizenship, promoting volunteerism, and empowering young people to be agents of positive change in their communities.

The Legislature will be hosting a Youth Parliament on Thursday, 25 June 2026 under the theme, celebrating 30 Years of our Constitution: “A concientised Youth advancing an inclusive economy and ending gender-based violence on the 50th anniversary of the 1976 uprising.”
