From 1,100°C to 80°C in under 30 seconds.

That is what FlameBlock Lithium Black does to a lithium-ion battery fire.

Here is why that matters:

When a lithium-ion battery enters thermal runaway, it does three dangerous things simultaneously:

1. It generates extreme heat (up to 1,100°C)
2. It releases toxic and flammable gases
3. It can re-ignite hours or even days after the initial fire

Conventional extinguishers address none of these. Water makes it worse. CO2 cannot cool a battery in thermal runaway. Foam does not pe*****te the cell structure.

Lithium Black was molecularly engineered to:

- Rapidly cool the battery below the thermal runaway threshold
- Contain dangerous gas emissions
- Prevent re-ignition
- Do it all in a portable 6-litre unit

We did not modify an existing extinguisher. We built a new category of fire response specifically for the battery age.

Because the fires have changed. Your fire protection should change too.

A fire barrier is only as strong as its weakest component.

That is why FlameBlock engineered Shield and Mineral Wool to work as a system, not just individual products.

FlameBlock Shield is a high-performance mastic paint paste. Applied with rock wool, it creates durable fire barriers that prevent heat transfer between compartments.

Where to use it:
- Cable pe*******ons through fire-rated walls
- Service openings in floors and ceilings
- Compartmentalisation in industrial facilities
- Retrofit fire barriers in existing buildings

FlameBlock Mineral Wool delivers three things at once:
- Thermal insulation (energy efficiency)
- Acoustic dampening (noise reduction)
- Fire resistance (non-combustible)

Together, they create a passive fire protection system that does not just meet compliance. It protects people.

Whether you are building new or retrofitting old, your fire compartmentalisation strategy starts with the right materials.

Your fire extinguisher will not save you from a lithium-ion battery fire.

That is not fear-mongering. It is chemistry.

Lithium-ion batteries burn at 1,100°C. They produce toxic gases. They re-ignite after you think the fire is out. And they are in your car, your solar system, your laptop, and your child's electric scooter.

Since June 2025, just four reported lithium battery fire incidents in South Africa caused damages exceeding R45 million.

Four incidents. R45 million.

The SA lithium-ion battery market is projected to grow from R4.8 billion to nearly R12 billion by 2034. That means more batteries in more places. More risk.

The uncomfortable truth is that most buildings, vehicles, and facilities in South Africa are equipped with fire extinguishers that are completely ineffective against battery fires.

At FlameBlock, we spent two years researching lithium-ion battery chemistry before engineering a solution. Because understanding the problem is the first step to solving it.

If your fire safety plan does not include a lithium-ion battery fire strategy, you do not have a fire safety plan.

South Africa is in the middle of a battery revolution. Solar installations with lithium-ion storage are appearing on rooftops across the country. Electric vehicles are arriving on our roads. Data centres are expanding their backup power systems. Mining operations are electrifying underground equipment.

This growth is positive. It reduces our dependence on the grid and moves us toward cleaner energy.

But it comes with a fire risk that most businesses are not prepared for.

FlameBlock Shield is a high-performance mastic paint that creates a fire barrier on walls, ceilings, and structural surfaces. It is not decorative. It is defensive. When exposed to extreme heat, it expands to form an insulating layer that protects the material underneath, slowing fire spread and buying critical evacuation time.

As South Africa is well into fire season, this is the time to assess your building's fire resilience. Not after a close call. Not after the insurance claim. Now.

Whether you are a homeowner looking to protect your family, a business owner responsible for staff safety, or a property manager with compliance obligations, passive fire protection is no longer a nice-to-have. It is the foundation everything else is built on.

Active systems respond to fire. Passive systems prevent it from spreading in the first place.

Every year between May and October, dry conditions, cold fronts, and strong winds turn the country into a tinderbox. The Western Cape alone lost over 33,000 hectares of farmland in a single month in early 2026, with damages exceeding R7 million.

But it is not just the veld. Household fires spike dramatically in winter. Informal settlements are devastated by fires from open flames used for heating and cooking. Suburban homes are at risk from overloaded electrical outlets, unattended heaters, and fireplaces that have not been serviced.

Here are the numbers that should concern every South African:
• An estimated 25,000 fires occur in South Africa every year
• Winter months account for a disproportionate share of residential fires
• Dry conditions mean fires spread faster and are harder to contain
• Most of these fires are entirely preventable

The common thread? A lack of awareness and a lack of preparation.

Fire does not care whether you are in a farmhouse, a townhouse, or an office block. It only needs heat, fuel, and oxygen. Winter gives it all three.

Share this with someone who needs to hear it.

Most people buy a smoke detector and a fire extinguisher and assume they are covered. But equipment that is not maintained is equipment that fails.

Smoke detectors: Test yours monthly. Press the test button and listen for the alarm. If it does not sound, replace the batteries immediately. Smoke detectors have a lifespan of about 10 years. If yours is older than that, replace the entire unit. A dead smoke detector on the ceiling is worse than no detector at all, because it gives you false confidence.

Fire extinguishers: Here is something most people do not know. The powder inside a dry chemical extinguisher settles and cakes at the bottom over time. If you have never shaken or serviced your extinguisher, the powder may have solidified into a useless block. When you squeeze the handle in an emergency, nothing comes out.
Service your fire extinguishers every six months. Turn them upside down and shake them regularly to keep the powder loose. Check the pressure gauge. If the needle is outside the green zone, the extinguisher needs professional servicing.

Fire blankets: Check that they are accessible and not buried behind kitchen equipment. In a pan fire, you need to reach the blanket in seconds, not minutes.

Winter is when you need this equipment most. Heaters running, fireplaces lit, candles burning during load shedding. Take 10 minutes this weekend to check every piece of fire safety equipment in your home or office.
10 minutes now could save everything later.
