A lithium-ion battery fire does not behave like a wood-and-paper fire. Inside the battery, one overheating cell sets off the next, and the next. That chain reaction is called thermal runaway.

Lithium Black was built for that. It is an extinguishing agent made from a mixture of minerals and salts, developed in South Africa specifically for lithium-ion battery fires. According to FlameBlock's testing, it takes a burning battery from 1,100°C to 80°C. It is also designed to stop the battery re-igniting (starting up again).

It comes in 2L, 6L and 9L sizes. It can be used in an extinguisher, or placed inside the battery housing, where it is designed to release only when it is exposed to sustained heat.

Pour water on dry, hot ground and much of it beads up and runs away. The water holds together instead of soaking in.
A wetting agent changes that. It is added to the water so the water spreads and sinks into soil and vegetation, reaching the root systems and the heart of a fire instead of running off the top.

The Western Cape's fire season used to run for about four months. It now runs for eight, from October to May.

⚠️Extra firefighting resources go in from October this year, not December.

If your farm or lodge in the Western Cape backs onto the veld (open grassland and scrub), the season has already started. Anywhere else in the country, the same jobs are worth doing before your own dry months.

Two jobs for this week. Walk your firebreaks, the strips cleared of dry fuel so a fire has nothing to run on, and test every water point. Then write down who does what when the smoke shows up.

A plan made on the day, with the wind up, is rarely a good one.

Most people think fire protection means a red extinguisher on the wall and a smoke detector on the ceiling.

South Africa is urbanising rapidly.

New commercial developments. Residential complexes. Industrial parks. The construction industry is growing, and with it, the need for fire protection that actually works.

But here is the gap:

Fire protection is often treated as a compliance checkbox rather than a safety imperative. Products are specified on price, not performance. Installation is rushed. Inspections are inconsistent.

The result? Buildings that look compliant on paper but would fail catastrophically in a real fire.

What needs to change:

1. Specify fire protection materials on performance data, not price alone
2. Ensure passive fire protection is installed by trained professionals
3. Audit fire barriers regularly, especially after maintenance work that may have breached them
4. Choose eco-friendly, non-toxic solutions that protect people during and after installation
5. Treat fire compartmentalisation as life safety, not a line item
