I was homeless for six months in 2011. I slept in my car. I used to park behind a small church because it was dark and quiet. I thought nobody knew I was there. Every morning, I’d wake up, drive to a gas station to wash my face, and go to work (yes, I had a job, just couldn't afford rent). One night, it was freezing. 10 degrees. My car wouldn't start to run the heater. I was shivering so hard my teeth hurt. I saw the back door of the church open. A janitor came out to dump the trash. He saw my car. He saw me huddled in the front seat. He didn't call the cops. He didn't come over and tap on the window. He just walked back to the door, unlocked it, and propped it open with a small rock. Then he turned on the hallway light and left. I waited ten minutes. Then I ran inside. It was warm. There was a couch in the lobby. There was a bathroom with hot water. I slept there every night for the rest of the winter. Every night, the rock was there. I never met the janitor. I never thanked him. I’m back on my feet now. I have a house. I have a bed. But every year on the first snow, I donate a check to that church. I write "For the heating bill" in the memo line. Sometimes the loudest way to love your neighbor is to say nothing at all.

We believe that the economic conditions of the impoverished can be improved substantially if they are given more “daylight” for productivity and we provide them with a clean, cost effective source of energy.
Most South Africans have access to a relatively cheap source of electricity that provides plenty of time after dark to prepare meals, complete homework, read, enjoy family and loved ones, and do daily chores, without polluting our homes, but that is not the case for those who live in squatter camps and other low-cost housing.
For these people, the only viable source of light may be kerosene lamps, which is not only extremely unhealthy to burn indoors, and a definite safety hazard, but also requires a constant supply of relatively expensive fuel to operate.
With our Lighting-up-the-future initiative, we aim to provide starter kits to under privileged families living in Gauteng, which would enable them to lead healthier, more productive lifestyles.

🇿🇦 WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO COMMUNITY SPIRIT?
There was a time when neighbours knew each other's names.
If someone was sick, food appeared at their door. If a family was struggling, the community rallied around them. Children played in the streets until sunset, and people looked out for one another.
Today, many people live behind high walls, security gates, and closed doors. We have thousands of online friends, yet many feel more isolated than ever before.
At the same time, South Africa faces enormous challenges. Unemployment remains high. Crime affects many communities. Families are under financial pressure. More people are struggling to make ends meet than ever before.
But perhaps the greatest challenge is not what is happening around us—it's the growing belief that nothing can be done about it.
The truth is that communities have always been strongest when ordinary people decide to care.
A kind word can change someone's day.
A shared meal can help a struggling family.
Teaching a skill can change a life.
Supporting a local business can create jobs.
Volunteering a few hours a month can make a lasting difference.
The future of our communities will not be determined by politicians alone. It will be shaped by the choices ordinary people make every day.
Imagine what could happen if every person reading this decided to help just one other person this month.
43,000 people helping one person each.
That would be 43,000 lives touched.
Maybe real change begins closer to home than we think.
