Statement by the Young Communist League of South Africa – Caleb Motshabi District
Introducing our Youth Month slogan: “Red Legacy, Youthful Fire!”
June is not just a month on the calendar — it is a burning reminder that young people have always stood at the forefront of our liberation struggle. In this Youth Month, the YCLSA Caleb Motshabi District proudly raises the banner under a new rallying cry: “Red Legacy, Youthful Fire!”
This slogan is not a slogan of convenience. It is a direct line drawn from the blood of Hector Pieterson and the generation of 1976, back through the militant youth who built the Young Communist League in 1921, and forward through every young Marxist who refused to bow to apartheid capitalism. It carries the memory of our district’s namesake, Caleb Motshabi — a young communist and fearless organiser — and the thousands of red-scarfed youth who proved that socialism is not a dream, but a fighting tradition.
Red Legacy is the debt we owe to those who came before. Youthful Fire is our declaration that the struggle against unemployment, inequality, patriarchy and imperialist exploitation does not retire — it is rekindled in every branch, every street committee, every workplace and every campus where a young communist dares to organise.
As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Soweto uprising, the Caleb Motshabi District calls on all young people to reject the myth that our best days are behind us. Grab the torch. The legacy is red. The fire is ours. Join the YCLSA and let’s build socialism — now!
