Mangaung is the only metropolitan municipality in the Free State province, with its headquarters in Bloemfontein. Following the 2016 local government elections, the boundaries of Mangaung extend beyond Bloemfontein, Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu and now include the rural towns of Dewetsdorp, Wepener, Vanstadensrus and Soutpan.
