Empowerdex and Business Report to recognise the most empowered JSE listed-companies in South Africa

03 October 2017: Twenty-three years into democracy, and broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE) remains a challenge. Real transformation remains at the centre of conversations about black economic empowerment.

In efforts to continue driving and inspiring real transformation practices, Independent Media’s Business Report has again partnered with Empowerdex, South Africa’s leading empowerment rating agency, in its research to assess JSE-listed companies’ success in meeting black economic empowerment goals over the past 16 years.

“Our role as the media partner is to support Empowerdex in showcasing the companies that have gone the furthest in transforming South Africa’s business landscape,” says Mike Ntsasa group executive at Independent Media.

“This partnership is relevant and important especially given the role of the media as watchdog of our communities, and we would like to continue observing and reporting on progress made in this space – as it is in the best interests of the communities we serve,” says Ntsasa.

The Empowerdex Most Empowered Companies Awards were launched 10 years ago, and Business Report has been in partnership with Empowerdex since 2014. The survey measures JSE listed companies’ performance in achieving overall transformation, and assesses them on a number of factors, from ownership to socio-economic development.

Nomzamo Xaba, group executive of Empowerdex explains that: “BEE ownership is essentially the measurement of the voting rights, the entitlement to economic benefits, being the dividend participation and the capital appreciation, as well as the debt-free ownership in a company held by black people. This is the simple explanation; however, no equity structures are designed so simply. There are a multitude of equity structuring tools that must be accounted for when measuring the participation of black people in the equity structure of a company.”

According to Xaba, the need for meaningful transformation in equity ownership continues to be a subject of national discourse in the quest for inclusive economic development. “Of note is the issue of ensuring meaningful participation and inclusion of the majority black population in this important sector of the economy," she says.

She highlights that a few years ago a number of somewhere between 24% (on the optimistic side) and 3% (on the not-so-optimistic) side was thrown around as being the true reflection of economic participation by black people in South Africa. To date, no conclusive evidence to support this optimistic view has been brought forth. While it seems some progress is being made, a lot more work still needs to be done in this space.

The survey provides a valuable assessment of empowerment levels at JSE-listed companies, examining various sectors and empowerment factors. Companies have been assessed and ranked based on their operating model under the various B-BEEE codes and charters. It also identifies the highest ranked companies in different sectors, reflecting the best-performing companies in each of the different categories on the BEE scorecard.

The 2017 award categories are:
· Most Empowered Company: Amended Codes of Good Practice

· Most Empowered Company: 2007 Codes of Good Practice

· Most Empowered Black-Owned Company

· Most Empowered Black-Managed Company

The 2017 most empowered companies will be announced at an awards gala dinner at The Venue, Green Park, Morningside on 4 October 2017 and results will be published nationally in the Business Report. The survey report will also be published in the Empowerment Magazine that will be distributed nationally in Independent Media’s Sunday titles: Sunday Independent, Sunday Tribune and Weekend Argus.

Independent Media announces finalists of the young leaders of tomorrow

It’s down to the final 15 young South Africans making a difference in communities. The leaders of tomorrow finalists announced.
08 August 2017: Johannesburg – Young people living in South Africa face a number of difficult circumstances but amidst these challenges, there remain some inspiring young people making a difference in their communities. The Independent Media has selected 15 of them who are achieving great things, and will announce the 2017 winners of the Young Independent Awards at an event to be held at the Houghton Golf Club on Wednesday 16 August 2017. Our fifteen finalists stand to win R250,000 towards their community development work.
“While we cannot reach all of the youth making a difference in communities across South Africa, we have selected those doing exceptionally phenomenal work. Our aim with the Young Independent Awards is to recognise and support the efforts being made by the youth of South Africa in playing their part towards the upliftment of our communities. It’s exciting because all 100 candidates and the 15 finalists have been nominated by the public or scouted by our journalism team so it really is an award from and for the people,” says Saajida Francis, Editor of The Young Independents (TYI).
Themed “African Youth: Be your Own Liberator. We support you.” the Young Independent Awards are aimed at celebrating the efforts of youth in a society where young people are traditionally portrayed as trouble makers.

According to Mike Ntsasa, Group Executive Public Sector and Founder: The Young Independents, “A lot of the time, especially in South Africa, the youth only make headline news when they are involved in troublemaking or when there is an education crisis. We see framed images of youth in protests and violence. When the tide turns, we must celebrate.”

He said, “It is encouraging to see the youth making headlines for leadership and proactive efforts to innovate and improve society, and we want to encourage this kind of spirit among youth in order for them to inspire other future young people to follow suit, if not do better and more.”
“We want to nurture a culture of leadership among South Africa’s youth and incentivising good leadership practices will enable us to groom the kind of leaders we want to run our country, teach our children and heal the nation,” said Dr Iqbal Survé, Executive Chairman of the Young Independents.
Leadership continues to be at the heart of ensuring the sustainability of economies, communities, and sustaining the fibre of society. It is not money that will prosper us, but effective leaders who will articulate the vision for organisations, communities, and the country. Our aim is to play a part towards shaping the kind of leaders we want for the future, highlighted Survé.
The Young Independents Awards have five categories:
• The disruptors, recognising young people challenging the status quo or traditional thinking with their unconventional ideas and actions
• The healers that includes young medical practitioners and educators, involved with environmental work such as recycling, and NGO workers
• The influencers, recognising young people who are influencing the actions and behaviours of brands, policies and people, and this includes government leaders, trendsetters, social media gurus, and critics
