After standing at the Old Mutual building in Pinelands for 70 years, the bronze statue of Wolraad Woltemade has been moved to Loxton Heritage Park in Milnerton. The new location overlooks the sea where Woltemade lost his life in 1773.
The statue was created by sculptor Ivan Mitford-Barberton and was originally unveiled in March 1956 by Governor-General Ernest George Jansen. The relocation was organised by the Friends of Loxton Heritage Park, with assistance from sponsors who supported the project.
Wolraad Woltemade, who lived from about 1708 to 1773, is remembered for his bravery. During a storm in Table Bay, he repeatedly rode his horse into rough seas to rescue sailors from the sinking ship De Jonge Thomas. Historical records of his heroic actions were written by Carl Peter Thunberg, a surgeon working at the Cape for the Dutch East India Company (VOC) at the time.
What a special day. β€οΈππ
