The Nala Local Municipality β Office of the Speaker, in partnership with Batjha Kopanang Foundation, successfully hosted the 1st Annual Youth Dialogue at Letlotlo Full Service School on Youth Day, bringing together young people from across the municipality under the theme: "Empowering Youth Through Civic Participation, Entrepreneurship and Leadership."
The programme commenced with a welcome address, followed by the purpose of the day delivered by the Manager in the Office of the Speaker, Ms Likeledi Sefika.
A highlight of the day was an inspirational address by motivational speaker Tshepo Mokoena, who encouraged learners to make education their primary focus. He challenged young people to study hard, strive for academic excellence and fight for distinctions in matric, emphasizing that good results create opportunities for access to tertiary education and future careers.
Speaking on Mathematics, Mokoena reminded learners that the subject is not difficult, saying, βMathematics is a subject. A book that is staring at you and that does not speak back. It only requires your time, practice and understanding.β He encouraged learners not to fear the subject but to dedicate themselves to learning and mastering it.
The event also showcased the incredible talent that exists within Nala through a variety of performances. Local choir groups Marvelous Male Choir and Isaac and the Mighty Messengers entertained and inspired the audience with uplifting musical performances. The programme further featured young and emerging talent from various learner dance groups, individual artists, poetry presentations and a captivating drama sketch that used storytelling to address issues affecting young people.
The Youth Dialogue session provided a valuable platform for engagement between youth and local government. The panel consisted of Bonolo Matlakala, Youth Development Officer, and Jabulani Mashiya, Service Delivery Coordinator. Discussions focused on civic education, skills development and education pathways, entrepreneurship and local economic development, as well as the importance of building an active youth voice in municipal development processes.
Young people actively participated in the discussions, raising questions, sharing their experiences and exploring ways in which they can contribute to the growth and development of their communities.
