Situated west of Hartbeesport Dam alongside the Elephant sanctuary it provides an environment where monkeys (primates) can be given their freedom in a natural environment. The sanctuary situated in one of the many Kloofs (Gorges) of the Magaliesberg mountain range provides the perfect environment for Monkeys from around the world. The Bushbabies Monkey S

anctuary is a privately owned, non-subsidised sanctuary, covering approximately 7 ha, situated alongside the elephant sanctuary in one of the many kloofs of the Magaliesberg mountain range. Bushbabies Monkey Sanctuary in Hartbeespoort, North West Province is one of only eight free-release primate sanctuaries globally. Primates, such as our squirrel, spider and capuchin monkeys, are given a new lease on life at Bushbabies Monkey Sanctuary. Previously raised as household pets, or bred for the pet trade, our monkeys are introduced to a wild world laden with waterfalls, lush vegetation, natural mountain springs and the chance to reside in as natural and environment as possible. Our goal is to give them the opportunity to live as they would in the wild. Bushbabies Monkey Sanctuary recognizes the importance of community education. Not only are our tours highly informative, but we strive to create awareness toward the benefit of releasing primates into sanctuaries such as our own. Guests leave our tours with the understanding that monkeys do not make good pets, and that they are better suited to a natural, free-living environment. We look forward to guiding you through our Sanctuary, and trust that you will enjoy the splendour of our natural environment to the fullest.

🖤🤍 Meet the Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur! 🤍🖤

One of the most striking residents at the sanctuary, the Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur is impossible to miss with its beautiful markings and thick, fluffy coat.

We often call them our little "polar bears of the forest" because their luxurious fur helps keep them warm during the cooler winter months. ❄️🌿

✨ Did You Know?

🖤 Their fluffy collars are what give them the name **"ruffed lemur."**

🤍 They weigh around 3.5kg and can reach 110cm in height, including their impressive tails.

👃 Like Ring-Tailed Lemurs, they have long noses and an excellent sense of smell, helping them navigate their forest world.

🌳 In the wild, these beautiful lemurs are found in the **rainforests of Eastern Madagascar**, where they spend most of their lives high in the forest canopy.

💚 Black-and-White Ruffed Lemurs are a **protected subspecies**, making conservation and education more important than ever.

🦉🌿 Did You Know? Bushbabies Are Masters of the Night! 🌿🦉

Many visitors arrive at the sanctuary excited to see our adorable bushbabies, only to discover that these fascinating little creatures prefer to sleep through the day!

Because they live in a natural, wild environment, bushbabies only become active around sunset — typically between 7–8pm in summer and 4:45–6pm in winter. That's when they emerge from their daytime hiding spots and begin their nightly adventures.

✨ Fun Facts About Bushbabies (Galago moholi):

🦉 They are among the smallest primates in Africa, measuring only about **37cm long**, including their tail.

👀 Their large orange-brown eyes help them see exceptionally well in the dark. If humans had the same eye-to-skull ratio, our eyes would be the size of soccer balls!

🌙 They are completely nocturnal, spending their nights hunting insects and exploring the forest canopy.

🐾 Before leaping from branch to branch, bushbabies quickly rub a little urine onto their hands and feet to improve their grip — nature's very own climbing aid!

These tiny nighttime acrobats are one of the many amazing animals that call the **Monkey & Bush Babies Sanctuary** home.
