NEXT EVENT: supper in the AVA's main gallery this Thurs (23 July), 6h30-9h30pm. Its new Director, Portia Malatjie, will demystify contemporary art in South Africa, along with Emma Bedford, senior art specialist at auctioneers Strauss & Co. Who are the names and places to look out for? What's the best way to buy? We'll also see prints made during the current residency before it finishes next week, plus an exhibition of architectural re-imaginings of our national museum. R350 per head before tomorrow, Wed, 3pm (R550 last min) includes Robert Mulders' supper, De Meye Wine, catalogue and donation to AVA (one of South Africa's oldest not-for-profit galleries, 35 Church St).
UPCOMING: Najwaa Francke will lead our tour of Groote Schuur, Cape Town's finest stately home, 23 Sept, 11am. Prof Vivian Bickford-Smith will be joining us for lunch at Rhodes Memorial to talk briefly about it and Cape Town as the creation of a British city. In the afternoon there's a chance of a talk at Rhodes Cottage Museum, Muizenberg. R400 for early birds.
On Heritage day, 24 Sept, Imam Mohammed Groenewald's Bo-Kaap tour about Islam in the Cape tour includes one of South Africa's oldest mosques and kramats (shrines). Meet at 11am at the Iziko house museum and finish by 2pm after a Cape Malay lunch cooked by Faldela Tolker in her home; R350 early birds.
The art collection at Ellerman House encompasses a cross section of genres representing 100 years of South African culture. For 12 of us, artist and guide Talita Swarts will show us highlights at this top Bantry Bay hotel on 20 Aug, 6-10pm, followed by an exquisite dinner in the John Meyer Room; R1 500 for the last two remaining places.
On 31 Oct, 3-7pm, Suzie Joubert will uncover some of the Waterfront's hidden heritage, ranging from the old rat catcher's house to the silo's becoming Africa's largest art museum - Curator Mark Coetzee will tell us more. Early birds R250 including Suzie's R125 award winning book and R50 Market on the Wharf voucher for our food stop.
