Today, the SASCO Western Cape Provincial Working Committee held an urgent meeting with PYA structures: ANCYL, SANCO YD, YCL and SASCO branch leaders from CPUT branches to plan an intervention at CPUT.

The meeting focused on current problems on campuses, the struggles faced by students, and how the PYA can unite to defend student's rights and protect access to education.

STATEMENT BY SASCO WESTERN CAPE ON THE RECENT STUDENT
STRUGGLES AND THE CRISIS IN HIGHER EDUCATION AT CPUT, UWC AND
THE COLLEGE OF CAPE TOWN

The South African Students Congress (SASCO) Western Cape Provincial Executive Committee
(PEC) has observed with grave concern the deepening crisis confronting institutions of higher
education and training across the province.
Poor and working-class students continue to pursue their education under conditions that
undermine their dignity and ability to succeed, while their needs are too often neglected until
they are forced to organise and protest to be heard. It is precisely this normalisation of
student suffering that SASCO Western Cape strongly rejects, as we believe students should
not have to continuously place their bodies on the line for institutions to take seriously the
conditions under which they are expected to learn.
It is against this backdrop that the recent developments at the Cape Peninsula University of
Technology (CPUT), the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and the College of Cape Town
must be understood.

These are not isolated incidents, but different manifestations of a
broader crisis within the post-school education and training (PSET) sector. These occurrences
expose a fundamental contradiction that our institutions cannot continue to speak the
language of transformation while reproducing conditions that make education increasingly
inaccessible and unbearable for poor and working-class students.

We as SASCO Western Cape therefore demand the following:

1. DEMOCRATIC PARTICIPATION
Institutions must respect the democratic mandates of students and engage their elected
representatives meaningfully. Decisions affecting students cannot continue to be imposed
without genuine consultation.

2. ACCESS AND DIGNITY
We reject financial exclusion and the normalisation of conditions that undermine student
dignity. Institutions must ensure that the

Today the South African Students Congress in the Western Cape continues with its Online Voter Registration Campaign.

This program serves as the continuation of many voter registration initiatives that we will embark on along with other organisations of the PYA, ensuring that we increase youth participation in the upcoming Local Government Elections.

On the 27th of May the South African Students Congress in the Western Cape launched its Online Voter Registration Campaign.

The day commenced with a briefing at the Athlone ANC PCO before proceeding to residences of the College of Cape Town Crawford campus, and then continued to Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) District 6 Campus where we held a voter education engagement coupled with the Registration of Voters, many whom are first time voters.

We were joined by ANC NEC Member Cde Ronalda Nalumango, the Treasurer-General of SASCO Cde Samkele Sgam, DSG of SASCO Cde Mangaliso Nompula as well as the Convenor of COSAS Western Cape Cde Linam Mili.

This launch served as the first of many voter registration initiatives that we will embark on along with other organisations of the PYA, ensuring that we increase youth participation in the upcoming Local Government Elections.
