Our Story
‘Die Oog’ is a protected natural spring, wetland and bird sanctuary situated in the heart of Pekalmy, Bergvliet. Die Oog is open during daylight hours (6.30am to 6.30pm) every day free of charge and visitors are welcome.
Die Oog is home to many waterbird species such as yellow-billed ducks, coots, moorhens as well as the Cape Weavers, Sacred Ibis and thick kneed Dik-kops. Egyptian geese and guinea fowl are very easy to spot. Terrapins and mud crabs live in the dam and wetland corridor. Die Oog is a major breeding site for the endangered Western Leopard Toad.
Die Oog is an important vegetation site with a section of rare granitic fynbos as well as a biodiversity area filled with indigenous plants including geophytes.
