We love Table Mountain deeply. That is exactly why we can no longer stay silent.

For years, volunteers, rescue members, hikers, trail runners, conservation groups and community stakeholders have tried working directly with SANParks and TMNP to improve visitor safety, trail maintenance, rescue coordination and crime prevention on the mountain.

We have sent emails.
Attended meetings.
Submitted proposals.
Offered volunteers, funding, equipment and support.

Too often, those concerns have been ignored until they become public.

We now have evidence of deeply concerning operational failures, including delayed rescue responses, ignored safety concerns, deteriorating infrastructure and stakeholders being prevented from assisting with safety initiatives.

This is a real visitor safety concern. We also have evidence that TMNP Ops room only opperates from 07:30 to 15:30 while a large percent of crime, rescues and fires happen outside of those hours. In another incident, a tourist was reportedly left stranded in severe weather while rangers logged off duty.

This is not about attacking people.
This is about accountability, public safety and protecting one of South Africa’s most iconic natural spaces.

Table Mountain belongs to all of us, and the people who use it, protect it and visit it deserve better.

We always have fun but there was something special in the air today. The weather was puuuuuurrrfect. Winter hiking is the best…..cool air, warm sun, no crowds.

And our guests today were 10 out of 10. Fab family on their very last day before flying back home. A hike with us is a great way to end your stay. The cherry on top 🍒 of the trip of a lifetime.

A big thank you to all our guests-past, present and future.

Meet Priscilla, a mother of 2 living in an informal area in a small shack. She let us into her world yesterday and I fell in love with her instantly. Her warmth and kindness despite her living in conditions most would deem ‘unliveable’ is inspiring and something to ponder.

At Mother City Hikers we are passionate about all things South Africa has to reveal and offer our guests.

and myself are on our way to becoming Cultural Guides as well as Adventure Guides which we already have qualifications for. The idea behind doing this is not necessarily to do Cultural tours (as we SO love being in nature with our guests) but to support the knowledge we already share with our guests.

It’s turned into an eye opening and very connective experience. One we wish to share with others as well. Keep an eye on us, follow along….new pathways are opening.

Who’s keen to hike South Africa’s most challenging multiday (on trail) with us in September?

We’ve done this thing the last 2 years that we call The Amatola Journey which is a whole lotta things mixed into one MAGICAL experience. It starts as a road trip stopping at some key spots along the route between Cape Town and Hogsback in the Eastern Cape. Then a fantastic hike through the Amatola Trail topped with a magnificent dinner at one of the most special places in Hogsback, then a return journey back to Cape Town again stopping at key places to complete our circle back to the Cape.

It’s a special journey, suitable for those looking to challenge themselves in a multitude of ways while also really coming back to oneself and the rhythms of the natural world. Expect some shifts, rejuvenation and realignment.

We have a few different options to choose from based on where you want to meet us or if you want to do the full hog and join for the whole thing.

We never know what the weather will really do out there so we prep for all. These guests got the GOLD in all the ways!

We absolutely thrive on hearing from you, our valued guests. Thank you Rick and Donna (USA) for taking the time to share your experience, what it meant for you and for truly seeing us!

What a wonderful hike it was, the climb was fantastic, the views spectacular and the leadership and conversation with Monique was so amazingly real. What a wonderful guide and person you have on your staff! She is a gem. Donna and I can’t tell you how much it meant to have Monique on our hike. One of the many best parts was her serving hot tea and rusks at the top, all three of us alone at the top, with rain coming in! What a special moment! She is the best! Our sincere thanks.

Please pass on to Monique how much we appreciated her conversation, sharing and friendship. It means so much to us to make a unique connection on our trip!

We speak from the heart, we love people and their stories. We work 2 jobs each back home and we encounter many people. It’s a great part of life for us. But this trip so far has been remarkable because of people we’ve met. Monique is a very, very special person. We are the lucky ones to have met her!!
