The Old Castle Brewery Building

The Old Castle Brewery Building The building that stood the test of time. This brewery is the second brewery of American design to be erected in South Africa. The main material used is brick.

The New York architect and Engineer, H Steinmann designed it. The construction period was from 1900 to 1902, with the disarrangement of internal affairs, naturally interfering with the completion of the plant. The structure is entirely fireproof, having skeleton steel frames, as buildings not built with this system were a constant fire hazard in Cape Town. The steel frames, the building material a

s well as the entire brewing equipment were exported from the United States under the supervision of the architect. H Steinman not only supervised the shipping, but the er****on of the building and the installation of a complete vacuum fermentation plant, comprising “F.F” steel tanks, chip tanks and glass enameled steel tanks from the Pfaudler Company, of Rochester, New York. The total cost of this structure was £120,000. It is done in English bond and displays an understanding of the structural as well as the aesthetic properties of brick. Castle Brewery, Woodstock 1902
Design
Its resemblance to a ‘castle’ is more advertisement. It is a deliberate design with its dungeons, rusticated stone base, turret, cannons and mansard roof. The building was built to emulate a medieval castle with its rusticate base of Table Mountain sandstone and upper face brick load-bearing walls. The South facing façade was the most important one and designed to face towards the recently completed railway line. The railway was the most important means of transport. This attention is unlike today when the building would have been orientated away from the railway line towards the North.

[ PRESS RELEASE ]
SOUTH AFRICAN RELEASE DATE 28 SEPTEMBER 2018

“THE RECCE” SELECTED TO SCREEN AT
PRESTIGIOUS DURBAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Cape Town, 25 June 2018: The Recce has been selected to screen in competition at the prestigious 2018 Durban International Film Festival on 20 July. This follows the film’s directors cut being selected to screen at both the Cape Town International Film Market and Festival in 2017 and Rapid Lion Festival this year.

This war drama, scheduled for release on the 28th of September 2018, tells the story of a young Recce, Henk Viljoen, who is wrongfully declared dead behind enemy lines, must use every resource he has to get home to his distraught wife and family, who are, in turn fighting their own emotional battles. Add to this the fact that the enemy is hot on his trail, it’s clear that this is no ordinary story of survival across the treacherous war-torn African landscape. This is also one of the first films in decades to explore issues regarding not only the Border War, but also the pain and suffering families had to endure during and after the conflict that lasted almost 20 years.

Audiences can’t wait to see this landmark film, if the reactions to the trailers are anything to go by. The first trailer has already garnered 540 000 views on YouTube and the second one, recently released, already has over 60 000 views.

Written and directed by Johannes Ferdinand van Zyl, The Recce script came out of his personal connection to the story, “I am thrilled that The Recce will screen in competition at the upcoming Durban International Film Festival, and look forward to the reactions of this discerning audience.”

The cast includes some of the biggest names in the South African acting fraternity, as well as some upcoming talent. This includes Marius Weyers (The Gods Must be Crazy, Paljas, Die Wonderwerker), Albert Maritz (Invictus, In ‘n man soos my pa, Modder en Bloed), Greg Kriek (Samson, Momentum), Grant Swanby (Beyond the River, Invictus, Troy), Christia Visser (Tess, Hollywood in my Huis), Maurice Carpede (Chappie) and Sonni Chidiebere (District 9, Blood Diamond, Hotel Rwanda).

The film was produced by Jac Williams through Cape Town based production company Man Makes a Picture Productions , and is the first in a slate of independent features from the company. Executive producers are Jac Williams, Johannes Ferdinand van Zyl and Jacques Le Roux. The Recce is being distributed by Gravel Road Distribution Group , in a multi-country deal.
