Protect Chapman's Peak Movement

Protect Chapman's Peak Movement P*P Movement to stop unneeded building on this World Heritage Site, Table Mountain National Park wilderness land. This natural gem is being r***d by greed.

This page is a call for all supporters of this cause to join in solidarity, and help in any way you can, express your outrage, tell friends, alert the media, phone the DA government offices, send emails, help with fundraising, sign the online petition and forward it on, and if you can, to be at the building site whenever possible to maintain a public show of protest. It is symbolic of so many glob

al causes where care for the environment is being overridden for the financial benefit of the few. The Cape High Court found in favour of the Western Cape Provincial Government at a 2nd interdict attempted to force construction to stop until a cheaper, less invasive solution be found was held on Mon 28 May 2012, at the Cape High Court, Keerom Street, Cape Town. The DA Provincial Government and Entilini are not following correct procedure to build on Chapman's Peak and will not explain why cheaper less invasive electronic tolling can not be used. Helen Zille has stated she will not bow to protest for fear of setting a a precedent for protesting ! We need as much public support as possible - Please LIKE this page , go to the EVENTS page & invite your friends to join you at these protest actions, and sign the petition to stop the building of corporate offices on a world heritge site.. http://www.avaaz.org/en/petition/Protect_Chapmans_Peak_Movement

Background
Chapman’s Peak drive, (Cape Town), in all her natural mountainous lush surroundings, gives ‘heart stopping' pleasure, to all that have the opportunity to share, in her raw natural beauty. Due to occasional falling rocks on the road that provides the opportunity to appreciate the cliffs, the view and access to hikes, as well as linking the villages of Hout Bay and Noordhoek, a contract for a tolling system was introduced several years ago to pay for its upkeep to reduce accidents. The toll company now wants to build a massive and excessive toll plaza to replace the existing small booths and at the same time they thought they would build themselves a two story office block nearby. This will cost R54 million - over R30Million of which to be paid by taxpayers and only a portion by the toll company who will then own the building for 30 years RENT FREE! This building will permanently mark this otherwise natural area and is completely unnecessary. Entilini Concessionair currently rent 90m2 office space for R10 000 per month. Several groups have arisen to try and stop this desecration and have appealed to government to intervene. The DA government has decided to side with the toll company and is supporting the building. Over 8000 signatures, a hunger striker and 2 protesters handcuffed to the construction site for 6 days have not made them stop and reconsider – which does imply a hidden agenda since many cheaper solutions are available for tolling this road.

5 years ago tonight I took a decision with Bronwen Lankers-Byrne & Charlie Gorton to ramp up the protest on the Chapman's Peak Toll Plaza site with a few handcuffs and a couple of girls we took on the Western Cape Provincial Government and their decision to pay R54million for an unwanted Toll Plaza on the iconic Chapman's Peak mountain pass.

How sweet the irony when yesterday the front page of the Cape Times hails the City of Cape Town winning the battle against SANRAL in the Cape High Court, against tolling the N2 & N1 freeways out of Cape Town through the Winelands. The Mayor raved about SANRAL having to pay R20million legal fees for the City.

How soon they have forgotten that the construction company Entillini sits daily on the only urban toll road raking in R42 per one way journey, and that Entilini has kept R58miilion in "wrongful compensation claims" currently earning themselves a cool R4million per annum in interest on the WCPG Roads Department money (which they have been given 20 years to pay back).

Oh god don't get me started... I will say one thing, I would do this Mountain Warrior protest again tomorrow with Graham Taylor my Advocate at my side ;) My 5 days on the side of Chapman's Peak was like a solitary sweat lodge deep into every night, watching the stars trickle over the mountain into Hout Bay... I had an amazing time camping and communing with Mother Earth. I found my voice

Constitutional Court finally halts Sanral's plans for toll roads in the Cape Winelands, once and for all.

Karma's biting Murray & Robbers bum:
Murray & Roberts, which paid a R309-million fine in terms of the Competition Commission’s fast-track programme, has confirmed that it has laid charges against six former executives under the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.

Work has slowed in the building sector and firms are turning on one another as the Hawks continue to investigate corruption in the industry.

"In May last year the City of Cape Town obtained an interdict against Sanral preventing it from tolling the two freeways.

The interdict will be effective until finalisation of the city's court application for an order to set aside Sanral's declaration of a toll road."
Tiny bit of credit must go to the Famous Three ladies who held out on Chapman's Peak protesting the Toll Plaza built by Entilini in February 2012 - we taught the Western Cape Government to protest Toll Roads! hahahahahahahaha ...

The SA National Roads Agency dug in its heels in the Cape Town High Court yesterday, refusing to make public documents related to the proposed tolling of the N1 and N2 freeways.
