🔥503 People Left Homeless in Devastating Khayelitsha Fire 🔥
On Thursday, 16 October, a devastating fire tore through S Section in Khayelitsha, destroying 74 homes and leaving 503 people without shelter or belongings.
Families have lost everything — not just their possessions, but the roof over their heads and the place they called home.

This documentary about the housing crisis and the work that Ikhayalami does in response to create replicable alternatives was produced by German TV. It has been broadcast many times.

Townships in Cape Town have been repeatedly hit by major fires – caused by both negligence and soaring summer temperatures. The NGO iKhayalami makes fire-resistant shacks to make people's lives safer.

One of our "Ikhaya LeKhaya" (from home to home) builds. An employee approaches us to build an improved, fire and flood resistant shelter. We provide pre-finance. The person's employer provides a guarantee and we erect the dwelling. The finance gap is bridged. A shack gets an affordable make-over and a family's living conditions are improved. It is all about trust.

Ikhayalami's innovative double-story housing project is in the news after completing its Empowershack Project in Khayelitsha.

The homes, ranging from 42.5 square metres to 80 square metres, were built in five phases over six years.

iKhayalami appears on the SAB Foundation website (www.sabfoundation.co.za).

In the Social Innovation Awards Category, iKhaya Lekhaya was awarded second place with grant funding of R800 000.

iKhaya Lekhaya is a co-financing model that enables employers to directly assist employees in improving their living conditions by providing fire and flood-retardant shelters.

Just two weeks ago we sat down together as a team and reflected on our role and our impact in the communities and we reflected on our way forward. We are grateful for the lessons learnt at the Social Impact and Disability Empowerment Awards Workshops. We have started to translate these learnings into practice.

Big week awaits the iKhayalami team. Their Khaya Lama Khaya project is in the finals of the SAB Foundation's annual Innovations Award. Ben Nkuna and Gloria Pavita will fly to Johannesburg and go head to head with 19 other finalists. First prize is R1,3 million along with a host of technical interventions to build organisational capacity. Best of luck to Ben and Gloria.
