CPUT Students Unite Against Violence and the Struggle for Free Registration

Greetings, CPUT students and comrades, As we are all aware, our campus is
currently facing a critical struggle the fight against the increase in registration
fees. We would like to extend our appreciation to every student and
organization affiliated with CPUT who continues to stand firm under the
banner of “No Registration Fees.”
Earlier this morning, members of MKSM met with EFFSC at the shuttle point.
Together, we stood in unity about 15 members from both organizations ready
to take forward the student mandate. From there, we began moving from
class to class, peacefully calling on all students to join the shutdown and
support the demand for no classes until our voices are heard.

However, during this peaceful mobilization, an unfortunate and unacceptable
incident took place. While in the Food Science Building, the MKSM leadership
was physically assaulted by a lecturer, Dr. Vusi Vincent Mashayisa, resulting
in a serious injury to one of our own. The comrade was immediately taken to
hospital and is currently undergoing X-rays due to an arm injury sustained
during the attack.

We, as students of CPUT, strongly condemn this violent act. There is
absolutely no justification for any lecturer to assault a student. This behavior
poses a serious threat to the safety and dignity of all students on campus. We
therefore demand accountability and decisive action against Dr. Mashayisa. If
such acts are ignored, they will continue and create an unsafe environment
for students.

We are also deeply concerned that Dr. Vusi Vincent Mashayisa was a
Convocation candidate for the 2025 elections, which makes this conduct even
more unacceptable. We have chosen not to open a case with Campus
Control, as it has become clear that student matters are not taken seriously by
that office.

We therefore stand united and declare that:
This lecturer must go.
Violence against students will never be tolerated.
The struggle for free, decolonized, and safe education continues.
Amandla!

All Power to the Students!
Victory or Death — The Struggle Continues!
In revolutionary solidarity,
MKSM Leadership

Umkhonto weSizwe Student Movement
Statement on Honoring Heritage Day
Date: 24 September 2025
Location: Cape Peninsula University of Technology

As the UMkhonto Wesizwe Student Movement (MKSM) at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), we release this statement to reflect on the meaning of Heritage Day for us as students and as a nation.
Heritage Day should be a sacred occasion — a time to honor the cultures, languages, traditions, and struggles that define who we are. Yet for many of us, this day feels far removed from its true purpose. It has been commercialized and reduced to surface-level activities, ignoring the deep cultural roots and histories that our ancestors fought to preserve. This distortion makes Heritage Day a painful reminder of how easily our heritage can be diluted and disrespected.
As students, we face this reality in a unique way. Many of us are far from our homes, our families, and our communities. We are scattered across CPUT campuses, trying to balance academics with the longing for the cultural grounding that we left behind. In this environment, cultural societies at the university become lifelines that connect us back to who we are.
We therefore wish to honor and salute all cultural societies that are active at our institution, especially the Xhosa Society and Ingoma Yesintu Society at CPUT, who continue to keep our culture alive even though we are far away from home. These societies ensure that our traditions are not forgotten, that our songs are sung, that our rituals are remembered, and that our pride as African students remains unshaken. Their contribution is not entertainment — it is a vital act of resistance and cultural survival.

At the same time, we encourage and call upon other cultural groups who may not yet have societies at CPUT to take up the responsibility in the years to come. Our vision is a university where every culture is recognized, represented, and celebrated. Heritage Day should be a reminder that our diversity is not a weakness but a source of strength, unity, and shared identity.

As MKSM, we reaffirm our commitment to defend and promote cultural consciousness at CPUT. Heritage Day must never be reduced to a holiday of leisure or consumerism. It must be reclaimed as a day of truth, a day of pride, and a day of unity. Our task as students is to carry the legacy of our ancestors, to protect our identities, and to build a future where every culture is valued equally.
We are far from home, but through unity and cultural pride, we are never lost.

🌕🌻✊ CHANGE IS POSSIBLE! ✊🌻🌕

As Baba Msholozi once said: “Inde lendlela esiyihambayo” (this road is too long).
Indeed, the road of students has been long — nights under the moon, hungry, hopeless, waiting for NSFAS allowances that never came.
While the SRC called themselves “Student Representatives,” they chose to represent themselves, not the students. But like the sunflower, students kept turning towards hope, refusing to bow down to the darkness.

✊ And when it mattered most, MKP MPs and MKSM leadership stood up, fought for students, and ensured that some have already received their allowances. This shows that real leadership is not about positions, but about sacrifice and action.

🌱 Yes, the road is long. But every road has a destination. And the destination is CHANGE. Your one vote is the step that takes us closer.

🗳️ On October 15–16, 2025, cast your vote. Do not waste it on those who abandoned you in your struggle. Give it to those who walked with you.

✅ VOTE MKSM — it starts with you!
