Statement on Honoring Heritage Day
Date: 24 September 2025
Location: Cape Peninsula University of Technology
As the UMkhonto Wesizwe Student Movement (MKSM) at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), we release this statement to reflect on the meaning of Heritage Day for us as students and as a nation.
Heritage Day should be a sacred occasion — a time to honor the cultures, languages, traditions, and struggles that define who we are. Yet for many of us, this day feels far removed from its true purpose. It has been commercialized and reduced to surface-level activities, ignoring the deep cultural roots and histories that our ancestors fought to preserve. This distortion makes Heritage Day a painful reminder of how easily our heritage can be diluted and disrespected.
As students, we face this reality in a unique way. Many of us are far from our homes, our families, and our communities. We are scattered across CPUT campuses, trying to balance academics with the longing for the cultural grounding that we left behind. In this environment, cultural societies at the university become lifelines that connect us back to who we are.
We therefore wish to honor and salute all cultural societies that are active at our institution, especially the Xhosa Society and Ingoma Yesintu Society at CPUT, who continue to keep our culture alive even though we are far away from home. These societies ensure that our traditions are not forgotten, that our songs are sung, that our rituals are remembered, and that our pride as African students remains unshaken. Their contribution is not entertainment — it is a vital act of resistance and cultural survival.
At the same time, we encourage and call upon other cultural groups who may not yet have societies at CPUT to take up the responsibility in the years to come. Our vision is a university where every culture is recognized, represented, and celebrated. Heritage Day should be a reminder that our diversity is not a weakness but a source of strength, unity, and shared identity.
As MKSM, we reaffirm our commitment to defend and promote cultural consciousness at CPUT. Heritage Day must never be reduced to a holiday of leisure or consumerism. It must be reclaimed as a day of truth, a day of pride, and a day of unity. Our task as students is to carry the legacy of our ancestors, to protect our identities, and to build a future where every culture is valued equally.
We are far from home, but through unity and cultural pride, we are never lost.
