"The service we render to others is really the rent we pay for our room on this earth. It is obvious that man is himself a traveler; that the purpose of this world is not 'to have and to hold' but 'to give and to serve'". Sir Wilfred Grinfell

Press Statement, 2 July 2020

*PRESS STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF THE SACP BRIAN BUNTING DISTRICT SECRETARY CDE SIYA SISWANA*

The Young Communist League of South Africa [Ufasimba] in the Western Cape joins the SACP, its Red Brigades and mass democratic movement in mourning and expressing its sadness and shock on the devastating passing of the SACP Brian Bunting District Secretary. We condemn the cowardly assassination and call on all law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned.

Without speculation, we are dismayed at his family's timorous assassination and view such within the scale of escalating violence in our society. Moerover, we believe that the murder was not innocent and thorough investigation has to be done on this matter. Cowards should not be afforded space in our society.

We reiterate calls for thorough and swift investigation into the matter.

The YCLSA joined the SACP in its official visit today and will work with the family in coordinating its own visit. The visit will be demonstrably done within the context of COVID-19 regulations and details will be communicated in due course.

Ends.

The Young Communist League of South Africa Brian Bunting district statement on Army deployment.

The YCLSA Brian Bunting district would firstly, like to welcome the deployment of the army into gang ridden areas in the Western Cape. The era of terror by gangs and criminal networks must come to an end.

However, as beneficial as the deployment of the army may be in the short run we are worried about the long term effects of this deployment. Our view is that the deployment of the army is a short term solution to address crime and gang related activities in the Western Cape. This view is aided by our firm belief that the army is not trained in crime prevention but will supplement the local law enforcement authorities in the interim. There is a general view from the public that violence should be met with violence and the army will provide the necessary force to neutralise the criminal activities. We caution this type of thinking as it may act as a pretext for declaring Western Cape areas as โ€˜war zonesโ€™.

As the YCLSA Brian Bunting District we do advise that this deployment must be accompanied with strategic objectives which will ensure that communities are safe. Failure to do so and relying solely on the army to curb criminal activity would be equivalent to placing a plaster on a gun shot wound. While we await a concrete plan to address the crisis of Crime in the Western Cape, we must look on members of the community to assist authorities in apprehending the criminal networks which operate beneath their noses. We further call on the Western Cape government to use this opportunity to strengthen community policing forums. There should be safe houses for members of the community who would wish to be โ€˜whistle blowersโ€™. Solutions should come from the community members for they are best suited to attest on how criminal activities have affected their communities.

Finally, in our next meeting as the YCLSA we will resolve on how we could work with other progressive organisations to address crime in our communities.
