The Western Cape Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC), together with Fire and Rescue Services, conducted Community Resilience Building Training in Karatara and Uniondale from 26–28 August 2026.

Funded through Santam Ltd’s Partnership for Risk and Resilience initiative, the training equipped community members with practical skills to prepare for and respond to fires and floods while waiting for emergency services.

Participants learned how to identify risks in their communities, reduce exposure to hazards and provide basic first aid using everyday items.
Deputy Director: Mitigation, Ms Janine Winder said, “Building resilient communities is about ensuring that people have the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to act when an emergency occurs.”

Officials from the Garden Route District Municipality and local municipalities were also trained as trainers, enabling them to take the programme to more communities.

🤝 Prepared communities are resilient communities. Together, we can reduce disaster risks and save lives.
