High speed chase in Mitchells Plain

The ACDP in the Western Cape commends police for their arrest of four men in Mitchells Plain. This follows a high speed chase along Jakes Gerwel Drive on Wednesday morning at about 6:00.
The National Intervention Unit of the police had followed the suspects from Nyanga. Upon seeing the police the suspects opened fire. The police returned fire and in the ensuing shootout one suspect was killed and four others arrested.
Two private vehicles were damaged when the vehicle driven by the suspects collided with them.
Ferlon Christians ACDP Leader in the Western Cape says the Unit recovered an AK-47 Rifle and two 9mm pistols with ammunition. Of concern is the number of high calibre weapons that are in the hands of criminals.
Christians says the ACDP applauds the rapid response of the Unit for their observance and swift action. They removed fi****ms off the street and in so doing prevented further crime in our neighbourhoods.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is celebrated internationally and nationally says the ACDP in the Western Cape.

The theme for 2025 is; Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters.

The theme reminds us that breast cancer impacts the lives of women and their families differently. The journey of the cancer sufferer is filled with unique experiences. Their journey highlights the need for dignity, compassion and quality care regardless of race or income or home address.

Christians says this is a time when communities, individuals and advocacy groups unite under the banner of the pink ribbon. It is a time when the promotion of awareness, prevention, self-examination and hope increases among females. He reminds us that self-examination should not only be done in the month of October, but throughout the year.

Breast cancer can be cured but regular self-examination is the key to early detection. Early detection enables the patient to have timeous effective treatment thus aiding recovery.

Christians encourages women to use the low-cost or free screening services available at local clinics and throughout the Region.

World Food Day 2025

On Thursday 16 October the world celebrated World Food Day says Ferlon Christians Leader of the ACDP in the Western Cape. World Food Day aims to promote and build world-wide food security. It aims to raise public awareness of global hunger and malnutrition levels.

The Western Cape is one of the most developed provinces in South Africa. Yet, surveys show that more than half of households (55%) have some level of food insecurity.

Rising food prices, unemployment and poverty adds to food insecurity. Informal settlements and women-headed households are hardest hit.

Lack of food in the house has a serious effect on growing children. Children under five are subjected to stunted growth. Hungry learners cannot concentrate at school. Under-nutrition in childhood results in poor resistance to illnesses in later life.

Parents become despondent and have high levels of depression when they cannot provide food for their families. Families become reliant on donations and soup kitchens. They try to exist on social grants, which is not enough to provide for a hungry family.

The big question is how can we solve food insecurity?

Neighbourhood Safety Officers

The ACDP in Western Cape welcomes the announcement that Neighbourhood Safety Officers will be deployed in crime by the Western Cape Government says Ferlon Christians Leader of the ACDP in the Western Cape.

The officers will address crime issues and initiate preventative measures as part of their visible policing and foot patrols. The programme improves community partnerships and brings officers closer to the communities they serve.

The Neighbourhood Safety Officers is a corresponding undertaking with the LEAP Officers and is deployed to high crime areas. They are part of the 700 Metro Police of the City of Cape Town who graduated last month.

Their deployment includes a unit for N2 and Airport precinct and neighbourhood policing for every Ward. The constables led by sergeants will increase the protection of frontline delivery teams in crime hotspots. Five officers will be deployed in every Ward.

Christians welcomes the stationing of the officers and applauds Western Cape Government for this initiative. He adds that any initiative by law enforcement that improves safety in our communities will add to the wellbeing of our people.
