In celebration of a new chapter in Cape Town-Japan relations, a special intimate gathering was held at Company's Garden on 20 August. The venue is home to the Japanese Lantern Monument, a gift from the Government of Japan in appreciation of the cooperation and benevolence of the South African government, erected in 1932.
Consul of Japan in Cape Town, Mr ITO Yorio welcomed the guests. Then Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health at the City of Cape Town, Ms Francine Higham gave remarks, and Mr Orlando Vincent Truter, a creative director and experience designer who leads urban greening initiatives at Mission for Inner City Cape Town and collaborates with the City to enhance the Japanese Garden in the Company’s Garden spoke on the history and recent revitalisation of the garden.
In attendance were officials from the City of Cape Town, members of the culinary industry, Japanese cultural practitioners, JET Programme alumni, members of the media and Japanese community and other guests. They were served matcha during a traditional Japanese tea ceremony presented by Mr KOBAYASHI Wataru.
We look forward to the continued strengthening of the friendship between the people of Japan and South Africa.
