Heritage Western Cape (HWC) is a provincial heritage resources authority established by the Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport of the government of the Western Cape province in South Africa. It is a public entity set up under the terms of the National Heritage Resources Act.[2] It is mandated to care for that part of South Africa's national estate that is of provincial and local significance i

n the Western Cape. It may delegate responsibility for heritage resources of local significance to competent municipal governments.[3]

Heritage Western Cape is best known as the custodian of approximately 2,500 provincial heritage sites, but is also responsible for administration of other forms of protection of heritage established under the terms of the National Heritage Resources Act.

Members of the public are invited to nominate candidates who could serve on the committees of Heritage Western Cape for a three-year period, from 1 February 2023 to 31 January 2026.

On Thursday, 17 November 2022, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, officially welcomed the newly appointed members of the Heritage Council as they start their three-year term.

Heritage Western Cape is a provincial heritage resources authority with the responsibilities of identifying, protecting, conserving, managing and promoting the heritage resources of the province. The newly appointed Council will serve in assisting HWC to deliver on its mandate, strategic vision and objectives within the province. HWC is committed to working innovatively to ensure that the local economy continues to be bolstered by important developments. The council will play an important role in supporting this work, while ensuring that our built heritage is safeguarded.

Heritage Western Cape CEO Michael Janse van Rensburg said: ““The appointed members come from diverse backgrounds and bring a wealth of experience which will certainly be of great value to HWC. The HWC Management Team is looking forward to working with the new members and chairperson of Council in delivering on the entity’s mandate in a manner that will inspire optimism in the heritage industry.”

Minister Marais said: “Thank you to the new members and chairperson who have taken on this role to ensure that heritage in the province is protected and promoted. I wish you all the best for your term and trust that you will serve on this council to the best of your abilities to support the work being done by Heritage Western Cape.”

The new council members are:
Reyhana Gani (Chairperson), Heidi Michelle Boise, Ron Anthony Martin, Siphiwo Mavumengwana, Dennis Lincoln Belter, Cornelia Hendrika Smart, Mandla Mdludlu, Cedric Daniels and Tyrone Gregory Ontong.
