[BREAKING NEWS] CPUT Council withdraws 2027 Financial Recovery Plan following student protests

The Council of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology has unconditionally withdrawn its draft 2027 Financial Recovery Plan. The decision comes after student protests this month resulted in at least three injuries and a university building being torched, with damage expected to exceed R2 million. The plan would have required students in university residences to pay R7 000 upfront upon registration. Following the protests, CPUT suspended its academic programme and asked students to vacate residences, though no students were forced to leave. At a special council meeting over the weekend, the institution also approved releasing academic transcripts and certificates to students with debt linked to the NSFAS accommodation cap. An academic catch-up plan is being developed and will be communicated once finalised.

The EFFYC CPUT visited the SIU offices in the Western Cape to submit a memorandum of demand to investigate the mismanagement of funds at CPUT.

The EFFYC CPUT has seen the work of the SIU across institutions of higher learning in South Africa. We have full confidence in the SIU to thoroughly investigate CPUT leaving no stone unturned.

The poor must not dare to bare the costs of illegal actions of the elite CPUT Management.

REVOLUTIONARY GREETINGS TO ALL CURRENT AND FORMER CPUT STUDENTS

This serves to inform all current and former CPUT students who were fully funded by NSFAS throughout their diploma or degree studies and were adversely affected by the NSFAS Accommodation Cap introduced in 2023. Many students were left with outstanding balances due to administrative shortcomings that were beyond their control.

The SRC is pleased to inform affected students that they may now be able to collect their qualification certificate and academic transcript by following the process below:

Step 1:
Visit or contact the Financial Aid Office and the Debtors Office to request a memo confirming that the outstanding balance on your first qualification resulted from the implementation of the NSFAS Accommodation Cap.

Step 2:
Take the memo to the Academic Administration and Graduation Centre (AGC) to collect your qualification certificate and academic transcript.

This is an important step in the right direction as the SRC continues engaging the University to ensure that this process is formally approved and implemented as a permanent institutional practice. We remain committed to advocating for solutions that protect students from being disadvantaged by circumstances beyond their control.

Finally, if you successfully receive your qualification documents through this process, we encourage you to share your success on your social media platforms and tag the SRC. Your testimony will help inform and encourage other affected students.

As part of our commitment to advocate for students in Private Accommodations, we can fully confirm that all student deposits in Safe Gate will be paid off.

We urge all students of Safe Gate who are affected by this to. Submit thee relevant documents to the FAO email stated in the poster.

Further engagements are on going regarding the development of other matters at Safe Gate.

No NSFAS student should be subjected to paying a deposit fee in any Private Accommodation‼️
