Michelle Wasserman, voormalige ActionSA Wes-Kaapse leier en voormalige onderburgemeester en speaker van die Knysna-munisipaliteit, het amptelik by die Vryheidsfront Plus (VF Plus) aangesluit en sal die party as kandidaat in Knysna verteenwoordig tydens die komende plaaslike regeringsverkiesing.

Wasserman is persoonlik in Knysna deur adv. Gert van Niekerk, VF Plus Tuinroete-streeksleier, Gert Niehaus, VF Plus-raadslid in George, en Jackie du Toit, voorsitter van die VF Plus Knysna-tak, by die party verwelkom.

Adv. Van Niekerk het gesê die VF Plus is besonder verheug om ’n politikus van Wasserman se kaliber en ervaring by die party te verwelkom. “Ons is uiters opgewonde dat Michelle besluit het om haar politieke toekoms by die VF Plus voort te sit. Sy bring ’n skat van ervaring, kennis en leierskap na die party, en ons glo haar betrokkenheid sal ’n betekenisvolle bydrae lewer tot die verdere groei van die VF Plus in Knysna en die breër Tuinroete-streek.

“Michelle het deur die jare bewys dat sy ’n sterk stem vir verantwoordbare regering, deursigtigheid en gemeenskapsbelange is. Wasserman bring uitgebreide ervaring in plaaslike regering en provinsiale politiek na die VF Plus. Sy het vir verskeie jare as raadslid in die Knysna-munisipaliteit gedien, waar sy onder meer as onderburgemeester, speaker van die raad en wyksraadslid opgetree het. Ná ’n periode waarin sy haar op verdere akademiese studies toegespits het, het sy na die raad teruggekeer en haar openbare diens voortgesit.

Gedurende haar politieke loopbaan het sy haarself gevestig as ’n uitgesproke voorstander van verantwoordbare regering en het sy ook ’n aktiewe rol gespeel in belangrike politieke prosesse binne die Knysna-munisipaliteit.

Nadat sy die Demokratiese Alliansie verlaat het, het Wasserman by ActionSA aangesluit, waar sy later tot provinsiale leier van die party in die Wes-Kaap verkies is. In dié rol het sy ’n sleutelrol gespeel in die vestiging en uitbreiding van die party se strukture in die provinsie en sterk klem gelê op ekonomiese deursigtigheid, sosiale geregtigheid en die bevordering van gemeenskappe se belange.

Benewens haar politieke ervaring is Wasserman ’n prokureur van beroep en beskik sy oor ’n meestersgraad in Menseregte-reg. Haar kombinasie van regskennis, openbare dienservaring en politieke leierskap word deur die VF Plus as ’n belangrike bate vir die party en die inwoners van Knysna beskou.

Michelle Wasserman, former ActionSA Western Cape leader and former Deputy Mayor and Speaker of the Knysna Municipality, has officially joined the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) and will represent the party as a candidate in Knysna during the upcoming local government elections.

Wasserman was personally welcomed to the party in Knysna by Adv. Gert van Niekerk, VF Plus Garden Route regional leader, Gert Niehaus, VF Plus councillor in George, and Jackie du Toit, chairperson of the VF Plus Knysna branch.

Adv. Van Niekerk said the VF Plus is delighted to welcome a politician of Wasserman’s calibre and experience to the party.
“We are extremely excited that Michelle has chosen to continue her political future with the VF Plus. She brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and leadership to the party, and we believe her involvement will make a meaningful contribution to the continued growth of the VF Plus in Knysna and the broader Garden Route region.

Wasserman brings extensive experience in local government and provincial politics to the VF Plus. She served for several years as a councillor in the Knysna Municipality, where she held positions including Deputy Mayor, Speaker of Council and ward councillor.

After a period during which she focused on further academic studies, she returned to council and continued her public service.
Throughout her political career, she established herself as a vocal advocate for accountable governance and played an active role in significant political processes within the Knysna Municipality.

After leaving the Democratic Alliance, Wasserman joined ActionSA, where she was later elected as the party’s provincial leader in the Western Cape. In that role, she played a key part in establishing and expanding the party’s structures across the province while strongly advocating economic transparency, social justice and the advancement of community interests.

In addition to her political experience, Wasserman is an attorney by profession and holds a Master’s degree in Human Rights Law. Her combination of legal expertise, public service experience and political leadership is regarded by the VF Plus as a significant asset to both the party and the residents of Knysna.

’n Raadslid is nie bloot ’n persoon wat tydens raadsvergaderings ’n stem uitbring nie. ’n Raadslid is ’n openbare verteenwoordiger met ’n wetlike, grondwetlike en etiese verantwoordelikheid teenoor inwoners, gemeenskappe en belastingbetalers.

📌 Wat behoort inwoners van ’n raadslid te verwag?

✅ Om die belange van inwoners en belastingbetalers in die Raad te verteenwoordig, veral oor:
• Dienslewering
• Begrotings
• Infrastruktuur
• Openbare fondse
• Munisipale beleid en besluite

✅ Om raads- en komiteevergaderings gereeld by te woon.

✅ Om voorbereid te wees deur agendas, verslae, begrotings en aanbevelings deeglik te bestudeer voordat daar oor sake gestem word.

✅ Om die administrasie en politieke leierskap verantwoordbaar te hou deur vrae te vra oor:
• Uitgawes
• Kontrakte
• Dienslewering
• SCM-prosesse
• Begrotingsafwykings

✅ Om onafhanklik genoeg te wees om kritiese vrae te vra:

• Is hierdie besluit wettig?
• Is dit bekostigbaar?
• Is dit in die belang van inwoners?
• Word openbare geld behoorlik bestuur?

🚫 Wat behoort ’n raadslid nié te doen nie?

❌ Stilbly om ’n politieke posisie te beskerm.

❌ Blindelings saamstem sonder om vrae te vra.

❌ Openbare fondse of onduidelike uitgawes ignoreer.

❌ Diensleweringsklagtes bloot as “politiek” afmaak.

❌ Partylojaliteit bo die belange van inwoners plaas.

📣 Die kern van demokrasie

Die stembus behoort nie net oor politieke partye te gaan nie. Dit behoort ook oor die gehalte van verteenwoordiging te gaan.

As kiesers behoort ons te vra:

🔹 Wie werk werklik vir die gemeenskap?
🔹 Wie het die nodige ruggraat en integriteit?
🔹 Wie stel moeilike vrae?
🔹 Wie staan op vir inwoners?
🔹 Wie beskerm openbare geld?
🔹 En wie is bloot nog ’n getal in die Raad?

🗳️ Uiteindelik behoort elke stem te gaan aan ’n raadslid wat werk, vrae vra en opstaan vir inwoners — nie aan iemand wat bloot sy of haar posisie of salarispakket probeer beskerm nie.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝘂𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗿?

🤔 With the local government elections approaching, many voters are asking: What exactly is the duty of a councillor?

A councillor is far more than someone who simply casts a vote during council meetings. A councillor is a public representative with a legal, constitutional and ethical responsibility towards residents, communities and taxpayers.

📌 What should residents expect from a councillor?

✅ To represent the interests of residents and taxpayers in Council, particularly regarding:
• Service delivery
• Budgets
• Infrastructure
• Public funds
• Municipal policies and decisions

✅ To attend council and committee meetings regularly.

✅ To be properly prepared by studying agendas, reports, budgets and recommendations before voting on matters.

✅ To hold the administration and political leadership accountable by asking questions about:
• Expenditure
• Contracts
• Service delivery
• SCM processes
• Budget deviations
• The implementation of council decisions

✅ To refuse to support unlawful or improper decisions.

✅ To act honestly, transparently and in good faith.

✅ To declare any personal or business interest in matters before Council.

✅ To protect municipal assets, property and public funds.

✅ To respect Council Rules of Order and contribute to responsible decision-making.

✅ To be independent enough to ask critical questions:

• Is this decision lawful?
• Is it affordable?
• Is it in the best interests of residents?
• Is public money being properly accounted for?

🚫 What should a councillor not do?

❌ Remain silent to protect a political position.

❌ Vote blindly without asking questions.

❌ Ignore public funds or questionable expenditure.

❌ Dismiss service delivery complaints as “politics”.

❌ Place party loyalty above the interests of residents.

📣 The essence of democracy

The ballot box should not only be about political parties. It should also be about the quality of representation.

As voters, we should ask:

🔹 Who is genuinely working for the community?
🔹 Who has the courage and integrity to stand firm?
🔹 Who asks the difficult questions?
🔹 Who stands up for residents?
🔹 Who protects public funds?
🔹 And who is simply another number in Council?

🗳️ Ultimately, every vote should go to a councillor who works, asks questions and stands up for residents — not to someone who is merely protecting a position or a pay cheque.

President Cyril Ramaphosa moet die Phala Phala-aangeleentheid vinnig en eerlik hanteer en afhandel sodat daar aan beweeg kan word na dít wat in alle landsburgers se belang prioriteit moet geniet: Die behoorlike regering van Suid-Afrika.

Wanneer dit gebeur, moet veral Suid-Afrika se beleid oor buitelandse betrekkinge dringend aandag geniet.

Die maatreëls en riglyne vir meer doeltreffende koördinering van internasionale skakeling is in 2009 goedgekeur en die tyd het aangebreek vir ‘n algehele hersiening en opknapping van dié beleid. Dit moet gedoen word. Die wêreld en die internasionale klimaat het sedert 2009 baie verander.

Suid-Afrika sal sekere aspekte van sy VSA-beleid moet herbedink. Die VSA bly die grootste ekonomie met die sterkste weermag ter wêreld en Suid-Afrika kan hom nie op ‘n vyandige wyse behandel nie.

Dit is wel positief dat albei lande nou op ambassadeursvlak verteenwoordig word en dit is ‘n goeie vertrekpunt om die verhouding met Washington te verbeter wat net tot Suid-Afrika se voordeel kan wees.

Suid-Afrika moet bereid wees om sekere billike toegewings te maak. Laat ons die uitstaande sake wat in die pad van so ‘n ooreenkoms staan – die vyf kritieke voorwaardes van die VSA - aanspreek.

Die voordele wat hieruit kan spruit, kan só ingrypend en positief wees dat dit die huidige druk op die presidensie in ‘n gees van optimisme en verwagtinge vir miljoene Suid-Afrikaners sal laat vervaag.

Die kern van ’n nuwe ooreenkoms behoort ’n pakt oor kritieke minerale te wees. Suid-Afrika kan strategiese toegang bied tot die eksplorasie, mynbou, en veral die suiwering van platinumgroepmetale, mangaan, vanadium, seldsame aardelemente en titanium.

Die VSA kan dit ewenaar met amptelike langtermyn-ooreenkomste, geteikende reserwebou-programme, en finansiering vir verwerkingskapasiteit tot in die finale fase.

'n Johannesburg-gebaseerde kritiese minerale-beurs gekoppel aan Amerikaanse markte kan voorsieningskettings ontsluit en Suid-Afrika as 'n globale verwerkings- en handelskern posisioneer.
Hierdie vennootskap sal ekonomiese geleenthede ontsluit en vir die VSA veilige, strategiese grondstowwe verseker.

Die strategiese voordele sal onmiddellik wees: Die VSA verseker hiermee betroubare voorrade vir die vervaardiging van elektriese voertuie, vliegtuie en gevorderde nywerhede, terwyl Suid-Afrika homself posisioneer as ’n globale verwerkings- en handelskern - in stede van bloot die eindpunt van ’n ander land se waardeketting.

'n Nuwe VSA/SA/Midde-Ooste-spilpunt vir mynboutegnologie, naspeurbare voorsieningskettings en KI-monitering sal aansienlike beleggings lok van Amerikaanse private-ekwiteitsfirmas en soewereine welvaartfondse uit die Golfstate.

Hierdie minerale-ooreenkoms kan Suid-Afrika se BBP met $40 miljard verhoog en sowat 500 000 werksgeleenthede skep regdeur die mynbou-, verwerkings-, energie-, logistieke en dienstesektore.
Dit sal ekonomiese groei tot 5% per jaar dryf en werkloosheid mettertyd halveer. Vir die VSA kan direkte winste uit minerale, gasuitvoere en landbou $75 miljard oorskry, wat die verlaging van Suid-Afrika se algemene tariewe na 10% regverdig en handelsvoorregte onder Agoa beveilig.

Die deur na die Withuis staan oop en die tyd is nou reg om ‘n waterskeidings-ooreenkoms met die Trump-administrasie te sluit wat ongekende voorspoed vir Suid-Afrika en sy mense sal bring. Die alternatief is verdere agteruitgang.

Die VF Plus is bereid om elke tree van hierdie pad met die regering te stap. Dit kán gedoen word!

President Cyril Ramaphosa should deal with the Phala Phala matter swiftly and honestly so that the focus can shift to what should be the top priority in the interest of all South Africans: properly governing South Africa.

Once this has happened, South Africa’s international relations policy should urgently be addressed.

The country’s measures and guidelines for the effective coordination of international engagements were approved in 2009, and the time is ripe for a comprehensive review and overhaul of this policy. It simply has to happen. The world and the international climate have changed dramatically since 2009.

South Africa will have to rethink certain aspects of its policy towards the United States (US). The US remains the world’s largest economy with the strongest military, and South Africa cannot afford to be hostile towards it.

It is encouraging that both countries are now represented at ambassadorial level, as this provides a good starting point to improve relations with Washington – something that can only be to South Africa’s advantage.

South Africa must be willing to make certain fair concessions. Let us consider the unaddressed issues standing in the way of a mutually beneficial agreement – the five critical conditions set by the US.
The benefits that could flow from this could be so profound and positive that they would overshadow the current pressure on the Presidency by stirring up a spirit of optimism and expectation in millions of South Africans.

At the heart of a new agreement should be a pact on critical minerals. South Africa could offer strategic access to the exploration, mining and especially the refining of platinum group metals, manganese, vanadium, rare earth elements and titanium.
The US could match this with long term offtake commitments, targeted reserve building programmes and financing for processing capacity that goes beyond, to actual throughput.

A Johannesburg-based critical minerals exchange, linked to US commodity markets, could unlock supply chains and position South Africa as a global processing and trading hub.

This partnership would unlock economic opportunities for South Africa while securing reliable, strategic raw materials for the US.
The strategic payoffs would be immediate: the US would secure trusted supplies for the manufacturing of electric vehicles, aircraft and advanced industries, while South Africa would position itself as a global processing and trading hub – not just a mine pit at the end of another country’s value chain.

A US/Africa/Middle East hub for mining technology, supply chain traceability and AI driven monitoring will draw investment from US private equity firms and Gulf sovereign wealth funds.

This minerals agreement could increase South Africa’s GDP by $40 billion and create approximately 500 000 jobs across the mining, processing, energy, logistics and services sectors.

It would drive up economic growth to 5% per year and halve unemployment over time. For the US, direct gains from minerals, gas exports and agriculture could exceed $75 billion, justifying the reduction of South Africa’s general tariff to 10% and guaranteeing trade privileges under AGOA.

With an open door to the White House, the time is now to secure a landmark deal with the Trump administration, one that can deliver prosperity for South Africa and its people. The alternative is perpetual decline.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) is willing to walk with government every step of the way. It CAN be done!

Die Wes-Kaapse Regering het aangekondig dat alle skole in die Eden- en Sentrale Karoo Onderwysdistrikte op Woensdag, 3 Junie 2026, en Donderdag, 4 Junie 2026, gesluit sal wees weens die ernstige weerstoestande wat die streek bedreig.

Die aankondiging volg nadat verskeie weerwaarskuwings uitgereik is vir swaar reënval, sterk wind, moontlike oorstromings, modderstortings en gevaarlike padtoestande in groot dele van die Tuinroete en Karoo.

Die besluit is geneem om die veiligheid van leerders, opvoeders en ondersteuningspersoneel te beskerm terwyl nooddienste en rampbestuurspanne op hoë gereedheid geplaas is.

Die Wes-Kaapse Regering het bevestig dat alle skole in die ander sewe onderwysdistrikte van die provinsie normaal sal voortgaan en oop sal bly.

Ouers en voogde word versoek om amptelike kommunikasiekanale dop te hou vir verdere opdaterings en om kinders tuis en veilig te hou gedurende die verwagte stormtoestande.

The Western Cape Government has announced that all schools in the Eden and Central Karoo Education Districts will be closed on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, and Thursday, 4 June 2026, due to severe weather conditions expected to affect the region.

The announcement follows a series of weather warnings for heavy rainfall, strong winds, possible flooding, mudslides and dangerous road conditions across large parts of the Garden Route and Karoo.

The decision was taken to safeguard learners, educators and support staff while disaster management teams and emergency services remain on high alert.

The Western Cape Government confirmed that schools in the province's other seven education districts will remain open and continue normal operations.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to monitor official communication channels for further updates and to keep children safe at home during the expected storm conditions.

The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 8 warning for disruptive rainfall, with the potential for widespread flooding, dangerous road conditions, damage to infrastructure, mudslides and other severe weather-related incidents.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant, monitor official weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel and never attempt to cross flooded roads or fast-flowing streams.

Disaster management teams and emergency services across the Garden Route remain on high alert and ready to respond to emergencies should they arise.
