⚖️ ANC back on the ballot
The Constitutional Court has ruled that the ANC may be put back on the ballot in six municipalities after it failed to finalise its candidate lists through the required submission process.
The DA criticised the ruling and warned that it could weaken the importance of IEC deadlines. ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula appeared overcome with emotion and relief after the judgment. He later suggested that the DA’s place in the GNU should be reviewed.
DA Federal Chair Ashor Sarupen said the ruling would not change the ANC’s electoral fortunes, describing the party as being in “terminal decline”.
🏛️ Fresh upheaval in Port St Johns
Port St Johns is one of the municipalities where the ANC will have its candidates reinstated. But the municipality is also facing ANC infighting: with just 20 days to go before the election, the party has removed its mayor and appointed a replacement.
The new mayor’s time in office may be brief. The latest shake-up shows the instability playing out in ANC-run municipalities—and why the DA is campaigning to stop the chaos.
🇨🇺 Project Kgala comes to an end
The DA has welcomed the decision to end Project Kgala, the SANDF’s cooperation with Cuba. The party says this follows years of pressure, repeated findings by the Auditor-General and a legal opinion that found the contract invalid.
The DA says military cooperation, technical services and training arrangements with Cuba have cost more than R3 billion over the past decade, while the SANDF struggles to maintain its equipment and fund essential operations.
