FOR MEMBERS ONLY: We deliver products, services and benefits to over 40 000 members who are either currently or historically a member of the South African Defence Force (SANDF) and/or the Department of Defence (DoD). Established in 1956, the SA Army Foundation is the preferred supplier of authorised products, services and benefits to employees of the Army and their legal dependants that the state

does not provide through the normal conditions of service. We are a Non-State Funded and Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) who is mandated by the Minister of Defence to provide our members with a variety of the best possible and better than market-related products, services and benefits. We focus our energy on those products and services that will be beneficial to as many members as possible, including necessities like life insurance, as well as products which are aimed at improving quality of life in terms of housing and education. The SA Army Foundation Champions Excellence At Chief SANDF Fittest Soldier 2026

In the vibrant heart of Potchefstroom soldiers from across the South African National Defence Force(SANDF) gathered from 26 to 29 May for the Chief SANDF Fittest Soldier Competition.

This premier event united elite athletes from the SA Army, SA Air Force, SA Navy and the South African Military Health Service. They pushed their bodies and minds to the absolute limit through demanding challenges that tested peak physical conditioning, mental resilience and operational readiness.

The competition serves as a cornerstone of military culture in South Africa. It reaches far beyond a simple test of strength or speed. It reflects the SANDF’s firm commitment to building a force that stays combat-ready amid constant global change.

The SA Army Foundation proudly stepped forward as a key partner for this year's event. The Foundation provided official t-shirts that gave participants a unified identity and maintained a strong presence throughout the days of intense competition. This involvement reflects the Foundation's mission to advance the wellbeing and professional growth of SANDF members and their families.

The Foundation's active role generates lasting positive effects. Soldiers who feel truly valued carry greater pride in their service. Families draw comfort from knowing that the dedicated organisations stand firmly behind their loved ones. This kind of partnership ultimately strengthens the entire defence ecosystem and builds a more cohesive and capable national security framework.

Honouring the Past and Empowering the Future

On this solemn Youth Day the SA Army Foundation pays tribute to the brave young heroes of the 1976 Soweto Uprising. Those students stood fearless against oppression. They sacrificed their youth so future generations could enjoy freedom and dignity. Their courage helped shape the democratic South Africa that the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) serves today.

The soldiers of the South African National Defence Force stand ready every day to defend this hard-won freedom. Whether deployed on peacekeeping missions, disaster relief operations or border security duties these soldiers embody sacrifice and patriotism.

They serve as the shield of the nation. The SA Army Foundation remains resolute in supporting military and their families through wellness programmes, member benefits as well as community initiatives.
To the youth of South Africa this 16 June carries a clear call.

The challenges of today demand education and resilient young leaders. Freedom must not be taken for granted. It must be used to build a better future. Excellence in studies, a strong sense of responsibility, rejection of entitlement and solid character are required to serve communities and the country with pride.

The SA Army Foundation supports this vision through the Adopt a Student Bursary Programme, a joint initiative with Maxi Credit Solutions.

The programme provides financial assistance for tertiary education to children of contributing SA Army Foundation members. It helps them overcome economic barriers and achieve their academic goals. All eligible families are encouraged to utilise this opportunity and invest in education as the foundation for a stronger tomorrow.

A special message to SANDF MSDS recruits:
The choice to serve in uniform through the Military Skills Development System represents a noble step. These recruits embody the best of South African youth.

They are disciplined, courageous and willing to contribute to something greater than themselves. By fully embracing training and upholding SANDF values they help build the capable professional force the nation needs. The SA Army Foundation stands behind these recruits and their families.

As Youth Day is commemorated the legacy of 1976 must be honoured, soldiers must be supported and the youth who will lead South Africa forward must be invested in.

SA Army Foundation Attends SANDF Tribute to Fallen Peacekeepers

The South African National Defence Force( SANDF) paid tribute to its fallen peacekeepers during the United Nations International Day of Peacekeeper’s Day commemoration held on 29 May 2026 at De Brug Mobilisation Centre near Bloemfontein.

The SA Army Foundation attended the event to honour the service and sacrifice of SANDF members who lost their lives while serving in United Nations peacekeeping operations.

The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is observed every year on 29 May. This date marks the anniversary of the first UN peacekeeping mission, the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), which was established in 1948. The observance recognises the service of peacekeepers worldwide and pays respect to those who have died in the line of duty.

The SANDF held a wreath-laying ceremony to honour and appreciate the men and women in uniform for their heroic sacrifices in serving and protecting the vulnerable through United Nations peacekeeping missions.

The event was attended by the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Angie Motshekga, Secretary for Defence, Mr Bareng Mthimkhulu, also present were the SANDF Chief of Staff Lt Gen Michael Ramantswana, Chief of the South African Army Lt Gen Lawrence Mbatha, Chief of the SA Air Force Lt Gen Carl Moatshe, Surgeon General of the SANDF Lt Gen (Dr) Peter Maphaha, Chief of Human Resources, Lt Gen Malungisa Sitshongaye as well as members of the Military Command Council and the Extended Army Command Council.

The SANDF has taken part in various peacekeeping missions across Africa under the United Nations, African Union, and Southern African Development Community (SADC). South African troops have served in countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Burundi, and Sudan. These operations formed part of regional efforts to support stability, protect civilians and assist peace processes. During these missions, several SANDF members made the ultimate sacrifice.

The SA Army Foundation attended the commemoration as part of its work to support armed forces personnel, veterans, and their families. The Foundation’s presence formed part of its mandate to recognise the contributions and sacrifices made by members of the SA Army and the entire defence force.

The tribute served as a solemn occasion to remember the fallen and to acknowledge the role of the SANDF in peace and security operations on the continent. The SA Army Foundation extends its deepest respect to the families of the fallen peacekeepers and to all members of the SA Army who have served in these missions.

The SA Army Foundation is present at the annual Kraai Braai Competition hosted by the South African National Defence Force 5 Signal Regiment today, 15 May 2026, at the Wonderboom Military Base Sports Club.

What started as a concept in 1996 has grown into a beautiful tradition that celebrates heritage, teamwork, and the true spirit of the braai, providing a platform for members of the SA Army family, veterans, serving soldiers, and supporters for a day of great food, friendly competition, and camaraderie.

The SA Army Foundation is participating alongside Rhemardo Resort and the Conference Centre in support of the initiative.

SA Army Foundation Provides Soccer Equipment to SA Army Football Championships

The SA Army Foundation has provided soccer kits and additional related equipment to teams participating in the SA Army Football Championships underway at Dunnottar Military Base in Nigel.

This contribution supports both the men’s and women’s divisions of the championships, enabling participating units from across the South African Army to compete in appropriate attire and with necessary equipment.

The championships provide an important platform for soldiers to demonstrate discipline, skill, teamwork, and unit cohesion through sport. Matches featuring teams from various provinces continue at the base, highlighting the integration of sporting activities within the Army’s personnel development efforts and the promotion of esprit de corps among participants.

This delivery reflects the Foundation’s established role in supporting the welfare and recreational needs of South African Army personnel.

Shield Life delivered a presentation to 1,748 SA Army Military Skills Development System (MSDS) recruits (2026 intake) alongside members from the SA Air Force, SA Navy, and SA Military Health Services in Bains Vlei near Bloemfontein.

This presentation plays an important role in the induction and integration process of new recruits. It equips them with key information and support resources early in their military careers, contributing to their overall preparedness and well-being as they begin serving the nation.

Reaching such a large group at the very start of their military journey ensures that all personnel across the different arms of service receive consistent and timely information, supporting a smoother transition into service and strengthening the foundation for their long-term commitment to the armed forces.

Chief Logistics Hosts Charity Golf Day

The Chief Logistics Charity Golf Day took place on 8 May 2026 in Thaba Tshwane, Pretoria, uniting members of the defence community for a meaningful day on the golf course.
