Congratulations to Dr Constant van Graan on earning his PhD and for his groundbreaking contribution to the field of forensic interviewing.

In his article for The Forensic Practitioner, Constant highlights the importance of transparent processes in every investigation. Transparency not only builds trust but also ensures evidence stands up to scrutiny in court, reducing reputational and legal risks.

Drawing on his experience as a former fraud investigator and now Senior Lecturer at North-West University, Constant has developed the Ponaletso CFI framework. Inspired by the Sesotho word for transparency, this innovative model integrates relational dynamics with established techniques like the PEACE model, offering practitioners a structured and ethical approach to conducting commercial forensic interviews in South Africa.

This framework is a significant step toward strengthening admissible evidence gathering, promoting integrity, and supporting the profession’s continued evolution.

👏 We celebrate Dr van Graan’s achievement and his commitment to advancing forensic practice.

The role of directors is built on trust, but when that trust is broken, the consequences should be lasting.

In her article, Gabrielle Zellerhoff unpacks the importance of section 162 of the Companies Act, a key mechanism that allows delinquent directors to be declared unfit to serve on boards. This accountability tool has just been strengthened: with the Companies Second Amendment Act 17 of 2024, the timeframe to act against directors has been extended from 24 to 60 months, with further extensions possible on good cause shown.

This amendment brings to life a recommendation from Chief Justice Raymond Zondo’s State Capture Commission, ensuring that directors who breach their fiduciary duties, whether in SOEs, municipalities, or private companies, can be held to account even years later.

Forensic practitioners are central in this process. Beyond uncovering facts, they guide businesses toward remediation, risk prevention, and stronger governance.

The mining sector is one of South Africa’s biggest economic drivers, contributing over R444 billion to GDP and employing almost half a million people in 2023. But with its scale and impact comes risk, from misconduct and malpractice to organised crime and corruption.

That’s where forensic investigators play a critical role. By maintaining integrity, objectivity, and accountability, they help safeguard the industry, protect employees, and ensure compliance with regulations.

In his article, “The Role of Forensic Investigators in the Mining Industry,” Johann Swanepoel shares why forensic practitioners are not just an advantage but an essential part of the sector’s sustainability and credibility.

The ICFP Youth Committee is committed to championing the interests of young professionals in the commercial forensic industry. Under the leadership of its committee members, the group focuses on creating meaningful opportunities for professional development, mentorship, and networking, while also advocating for access to training and career advancement.

Over the past year, they have been actively building awareness of commercial forensic practice as a career, participating in university career days at NWU, Wits, and the University of Pretoria, and hosting webinars to equip young forensic practitioners with insights into industry standards and strategies to strengthen their professional profiles.

They are also working to promote diversity and inclusion in the field, foster relationships with potential employers, and support students with mentorship and internship opportunities.

Looking ahead, the committee plans to take this outreach further through school career events, podcasts, and community radio engagements, making sure the next generation of forensic practitioners knows the opportunities that await them.

Their vision is clear: to inspire, connect, and prepare young professionals to excel in a profession built on integrity, objectivity, and collaboration.
