South African Civil Aviation Authority - SACAA

South African Civil Aviation Authority - SACAA The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) is a Schedule 3A public entity in terms of the Public Finance Management Act (“PFMA”).

The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) is the national body responsible for controlling, regulating, and promoting aviation safety, security, and sustainability. It was established on the 1st of October 1998, following the enactment of the now repealed South African Civil Aviation Authority Act,1998 (Act No.40 of 1998). The Act provided for the establishment of a stand-alone authority

charged with promoting, regulating and enforcing civil aviation safety and security. It reflected the Government's priorities and was in line with international trends in the aviation world where more and more states implemented this option. The abovementioned Act was repealed as a whole by the Civil Aviation Act, 2009, (Act No.13 of 2009). The Act, provides for the establishment of a stand-alone authority mandated with controlling, promoting, regulating, supporting, developing, enforcing and continuously improving levels of safety and security throughout the civil aviation industry. The SACAA is an agency of the Department of Transport (DoT). The above is to be achieved by complying with the Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), whilst considering the local context.

The SACAA Aviation Development team is on the ground at the South African Air Force Career Exhibition, at the SAAF Mobile Deployment Wing in Valhalla, Pretoria engaging with learners and showcasing the many opportunities available within the aviation industry.

The day commenced with an official welcome from the Deputy Chief of Air Force Major General Lancelot Mathebula, setting the tone for a day of career exploration, learning and inspiration.

In the previous 2025/26 financial year, the SACAA reached 97 329 learners through school visits and career exhibitions, where learners were given the opportunity to expand their knowledge of various career opportunities within the dynamic aviation sector.

Through initiatives like these, we continue to bring aviation closer to young people and inspire the next generation of aviation professionals.

Today, on World Environment Day, we recognise the role aviation must continue to play in building a more sustainable future.

Through Aviation Environmental Protection (AEP), the SACAA continues to support environmental sustainability within aviation by contributing towards initiatives focused on reducing environmental impact and promoting responsible aviation practices.

As the aviation industry evolves globally, sustainability remains a shared responsibility, and at the SACAA, we are committed to contributing towards safer skies and a greener future for generations to come.

Behind this work are passionate professionals driving meaningful change within the aviation ecosystem every day.

More than a colour. More than a logo.

As aviation continues to evolve through innovation, technology and global transformation, so does our responsibility toward building a more sustainable future.

At the SACAA, we recognise the impact aviation has on the environment and remain committed to exploring progressive ways to support environmental protection while advancing aviation safety. This commitment is reflected in our new brand identity.

The green in our logo symbolises growth, renewal, energy and safety, representing our continuous drive toward improvement, sustainability and responsible aviation oversight.

The globe reinforces our commitment to upholding international aviation safety and security standards, not only in South Africa, but across the continent and beyond.

With our experience, dedication and commitment, we continue to play a central role in shaping safer skies and a more sustainable aviation future.

We are proudly the SACAA.

When people think about aviation, they often think about safety in the skies, but sustainability in aviation is just as important.

As global conversations around environmental protection and carbon emission reduction continue to shape the future of aviation, the SACAA is also playing its role in building a more sustainable aviation industry.

In recognition of Environmental Awareness this June, we sat down with Pamela Madondo, Aviation Environmental Specialist within Aviation Safety Infrastructure (ASI), to unpack:
• What Aviation Environmental Protection (AEP) does in the industry
• Why it matters, and
• How the SACAA contributes to environmental sustainability within aviation locally, regionally and globally.

This conversation highlights the important work being done behind the scenes by the people helping shape a safer and more sustainable aviation future.

We did it for the dreamers.

Today, we swapped our aviation boots and shoes for slippers in support of Slipper Day by the Reach for a Dream Foundation.

Behind every pair of slippers is a child holding onto hope, and a dream worth fighting for.

The SACAA is proud to have stepped into that hope together.

The SACAA celebrates Africa Day, a moment that reflects our growing continental footprint in the aviation sector and our commitment to leaving no country behind.

As we continue advancing African aviation, our renewed commitment to excellence is reflected in our new brand identity, a symbol of pride, progress, and a shared vision for the future of aviation on the continent.

Today, we celebrate the strides we have made as Africans while reflecting on the common challenges we continue to navigate in an evolving global environment.

The SACAA Director of Civil Aviation, Ms Poppy Khoza, delivered a key address at the third African Aviation Safety Operations Summit in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg, this morning.

This conference is being hosted by the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) in partnership with the Flight Safety Foundation.

In her address, Ms Khoza highlighted:
- The importance of building an aviation culture rooted in competence, excellence, reliability, accountability and global confidence.
- The importance of collaboration in building a safety and security conscience aviation sector on the African content.

“A safety culture cannot exist only in documents, manuals or presentations, but must be reflected in leadership, operational decision-making, reporting environments, organisational accountability and the daily behaviours that shape safety outcomes across the aviation system,” she said.
