The latest summer crop estimates once again demonstrate the productive capacity of South African agriculture. The figures speak for themselves — our graphics unpack the latest CEC estimates.

But a strong harvest matters far beyond the farm gate.

Agriculture grew by 3.9% in the first quarter of 2026, while food and non-alcoholic beverage inflation slowed to 0.9% in July.

For AgriSA, the message is clear: food security depends on maintaining South Africa’s ability to produce.

Farmers need an environment that enables them to remain competitive, invest in the next season and continue producing food sustainably.

A strong harvest is good news. Protecting the capacity to produce the next one is just as important.

Speaking at the Agri Northern Cape Congress, Janine Beyleveld highlighted the importance of farmers formally reporting incidents, from rural safety and infrastructure failures to biosecurity threats, and also capturing them on AgriSpoor.

Reporting is not simply administration. Every report helps build a clearer picture of what is happening on the ground. Better information means more accurate statistics, stronger engagement with authorities and a better chance of resources being directed where they are actually needed.

One incident is a report. Many reports reveal a pattern. And patterns are much harder to ignore.

AgriSA CEO, Johann Kotzé, represented organised agriculture at the Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium of South Africa (SIDSSA) in Cape Town.

Infrastructure is fundamental to agricultural growth. From water and energy to roads, rail, ports and digital connectivity, our ability to produce, invest and get agricultural products to market depends on infrastructure that works.

SIDSSA brings government, business, investors and development partners together around South Africa's infrastructure priorities.

This work is already under way on the ground. AgriSA and Agbiz have partnered with Infrastructure South Africa on a road corridor pilot project in the Free State, launched in February 2026, to identify the rural and provincial roads that matter most for agricultural logistics. The pilot combines ISA's road network analysis with our sector's commodity flow data to guide targeted investment that lowers transport costs for producers.

For AgriSA, being part of this forum ensures that agriculture's realities, needs and growth potential are represented as those priorities are shaped and advanced.

Agriculture's voice must be part of the infrastructure conversation.
