As populations age, seniors are increasingly pushed to the margins of society, leading to devastating rates of isolation and extreme vulnerability to physical, emotional, and financial abuse.

Today marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, concluding the month-long 'Go Turquoise' campaign aimed at shining a bright light on the rights of older persons in South Africa.

Turquoise symbolizes the calmness, communication, and protection our seniors so deeply deserve.

At Badisa Citrusdal, our social work teams remain firmly dedicated to uplifting the elderly, providing support structures, and legally intervening when abuse occurs.

The unfortunate reality is that many cases of child abuse remain completely hidden because community members assume that child protection is solely the job of the police or social workers. They often look the other way, hoping someone else will intervene. Even though Child Protection Week has ended, true safety starts with ordinary citizens keeping their eyes open.

At Badisa Citrusdal, our social workers can only intervene if we know a child is in danger. You have the power to be a safe space simply by listening to the children in your neighborhood, noticing sudden changes in their behavior, and having the courage to speak up. Non-profit child protection services rely heavily on external funding to operate, but asking local businesses for massive, lump-sum donations during tough economic times often feels impossible and unrealistic.

We believe that securing our children's safety doesn't have to bankrupt our local economy; it just requires a highly targeted, collaborative effort. Badisa has officially launched the "Give One Hour" campaign for Child Protection Week.

We are calling on local companies, retail stores, and family entertainment venues in the Western Cape to partner with us. You can participate by simply donating the equivalent of one hour of profit generated during your business day directly towards our statutory child protection services.

As National Child Protection Week officially concluded on June 5th, there is a massive risk that the public conversation will simply fade away, leaving vulnerable youth in the exact same dangerous circumstances.

Wearing a green ribbon for a week is important for awareness, but true child protection requires a relentless, 365-day commitment from the entire community. For the social workers at Badisa Clanwilliam, the fight for the safety and dignity of children in Clanwilliam continues tomorrow and every day after.

We remain fiercely dedicated to our statutory interventions and family preservation programs. We urge our local communities to keep their eyes open and actively partner with us to break the cycles of abuse.
