Deputy Minister Mr Mondli Gungubele launches innovation by driving African Digital Transformation

REAH is proud to showcase its latest technology solutions, mainly designed to accelerate innovation, connectivity and digital inclusion across the world.

The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT), in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), is introducing the African Digital Transformation Centre (ADTC) as a national and regional platform to accelerate innovation, digital skills development, and entrepreneurship. [REFLECTIONS] The National Language Stakeholder Engagement Forum hosted by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, 4-5 Nov 2024

We continue to give anyone the freedom to do something meaningful, ensuring they have a seat at the table and that their contributions are valued in decision-making at every level.

📷 [PIC] Present were Minister of Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), the Acting DG of DSAC, CEOs, Executives of SABC, PanSALB, SADiLar and our own Celimpilo Nkosinathi Thabethe (Software Developer and SA Sign Language Lead).

This gathering was significant for REAH, as it provided an opportunity for us / Celimpilo Nkosinathi Thabethe to discuss the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in addressing the underrepresentation of African languages in AI tools and systems. Our goal is to utilize AI Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision to eliminate language barriers and improve access to information, regardless of a person's home African language, while also breaking down communication barriers between Africa's diverse local language groups, including African Sign Language(s), Zulu, Akan, Yoruba, and Swahili.

Celebrating 4 years of REAH Cx towards inclusivity and innovation 🎉

The REAH story began in 2017, during youth training to learn how to code. It was then discovered that individuals who rely on sign language often face obstacles in accessing information and resources. 🌍

Mbula Research and Development conceptualized REAH to offer technological solutions, including digital apps, tools, and systems, to improve accessibility and support the needs of individuals who rely on sign language to communicate. After months of development and testing, REAH C9 was launched during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, enabling seamless interactions through wearable glasses that connect users with sign language interpreters. 🤘🏽

Moving into 2021 and 2022, Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology enhanced the capabilities of REAH C9, leading to a rebranding of the solution to REAH Cx. This marked a new era utilizing AI models to deliver SASL-Speech-Text or vice versa and achieving 95% AI speech-to-text accuracy. 📚🤘🏽

In addition to improving the AI systems, the solution's name was also transformed to REAH Cx. The “C” no longer represents communication during COVID-19 but signifies communication from an inclusive perspective to urgently develop and promote minority and marginalized languages. The “X” represents African languages, including South African Sign Language (SASL) and other minority languages. 🤘🏽

As we celebrate the impact of REAH Cx, it is currently deployed and supported by South African government departments and schools. 📚

📍 REAH Hosts the Deputy Mayor of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality and the CEO of The Innovation Hub

On September 12, 2024, Mbula welcomed Dr Nasiphi Moya, Deputy Mayor of Tshwane, and the CEO of The Innovation Hub, Mr Bangani Mpangalasane.

This visit was an opportunity to share REAH and Mbula's achievements over the years, emphasizing its initiatives that bring societal change.

We highlighted our solutions, including:

💡 Sign Language AI Transcription service offers over 90% accuracy and SASL-Speech-to-Text capabilities.
💡 Virtual Interpreter Software enhances access to Sign Language interpreters and integrates seamlessly with existing platforms.
💡 The incubation Management System supports enterprise development and funding, which benefits The Innovation Hub's entrepreneurs.
💡 Future Coding has trained over 70 Deaf youth nationwide, while REAH has provided schools with more than 8,000 digital assets of Sign Language educational content.
💡 REAH HM12, at the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) clients can opt for South African Sign Language (AI) to complete a transaction.

🏆 The Deputy Mayor and CEO also viewed Mbula's awards, including the Gauteng Premier's Awards for Social Transformation and the Sentech Africa Tech Week Startup Award.

📍 In August 2024, REAH Celebrated Women's Month

🥳 HONORING ACHIEVEMENTS AND EMPOWERMENT

In collaboration with Mbula Research and Development, REAH proudly hosted a Women's Month celebration on August 8, 2024, at the head offices in Lynwood, City of Tshwane. This event was dedicated to celebrating women's remarkable achievements and recognizing the strides they have made in empowering themselves and others.

The event featured speakers who openly shared their experiences, fostering a supportive environment where women could empower one another and realize they are not alone in their journeys.

💡 Ndhlovu said that "Life is easy, and whoever said it was not telling the truth”, highlights the often-overlooked reality that success is linked to resilience and the ability to navigate life's challenges. Lerato Ramorola emphasized that women have set high standards in their lives and have gained the ability to voice their concerns without fear.

Women have gained decision-making power and are actively reshaping their future generations. 💡Nombuso Hlubi highlighted that women are taking the lead and opening doors for themselves. Furthermore, the discussion also addressed the achievements women made by balancing and managing families and careers. "Living as a woman with a family while pursuing a career is far from easy, but it is a reality we must adapt to”, said 💡 Ndlovu.

💡William Sebothoma said that “women can now stand up for themselves and achieve their goals despite any obstacles”. 💡Celimpilo Nkosinathi Thabethe agreed with him and added that indeed women have achieved independence and personal growth.

Mbula Research and Development Women’s Month celebration reaffirmed the importance of women’s empowerment and achievements, issuing a call to action for everyone to support and celebrate women.

👉🏾Together, we can create an environment where women continue to inspire and uplift one another, paving the way for future generations.
