When communicating with a deaf person, always get their attention by gently tapping them on the shoulder, not on the head, back, or any other part of the body.

As shown in the video, a light tap on the shoulder is respectful, professional and culturally appropriate in deaf culture. It allows the person to turn and make eye contact so you can communicate clearly through lip-reading, gestures, or sign language.

Tembisa Hospital hosted a Deaf Awareness function on Friday, 23 October 2026 under the theme “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights.”

The celebration focused on making the hasn't an inclusive space for all by educating and empowering staff members through basic sign language lessons to promote effective communication with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
The session also highlighted the importance of treating deaf and non-speaking people with dignity, respect, patience and compassion, while ensuring that they receive equal access to healthcare services.

The function, which was put together by the Speech & Audiology unit, received rave reviews from the attendees, and there is hoe that communication will improve in making the hospital an inclusive space for all.

Breast cancer: Zooming into the risk factors

In the continued awareness on breast cancer, The Tembisa Hospital X-ray unit's mammographer Sandra Sebothoma talks about the risk factors one needs to know, and the signs and symptoms one should never ignore, like lumps, changes in breast size or skin, and ni**le discharge.

Sebothoma also reminds the community of the Pink drive this October, to screen 100 women, whether you have symptoms or not. And also do remember that Thursday, 22 October 2026 is the last day for free screening.

[WATCH] Nutrition Week Awareness campaign targets healthy eating amongst children

In keeping with the , the Dietetics unit at Tembisa Hospital visited the Paediatric OPD to educate parents on the importance of providing healthy, balanced and age-appropriate meals for infants and young children. This took place on Wednesday, 15 October 2026.

The initiative aimed to raise awareness about proper nutrition during the early stages of childhood, highlighting how healthy eating supports growth, development and overall well-being.
