Corporate Services Department – Occupational Health and Safety Unit
The Occupational Health and Safety Unit continues to promote a culture of safety and compliance across the Municipality. The Occupational Health and Safety Officer visited employees within the Community Services and Technical Services Departments and conducted a Toolbox Talk session aimed at strengthening workplace safety awareness and ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993.
The session focused on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) compliance, incident reporting procedures, and the roles and responsibilities of both employers and employees in maintaining a safe and healthy working environment.
Employees were further reminded of the legislative framework governing workplace health and safety, including:
• Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993
• General Safety Regulations relating to PPE, First Aid, and safe chemical use
• Hazardous Chemical Substances Regulations regarding labeling, storage, and training
• Environmental Regulations for workplaces, including ventilation, lighting, and sanitation requirements
• General Administrative Regulations concerning the appointment of Safety Representatives and the establishment of Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Committees
In addition, the Occupational Health and Safety Unit conducted an induction and orientation session for cleaning staff to ensure compliance with safe work practices, hygiene standards, and municipal requirements before the commencement of duties. The session covered the correct use of PPE, safe handling of cleaning chemicals, emergency and evacuation procedures, hazard identification and reporting, completion of daily cleaning log sheets, as well as environmental and waste disposal guidelines.
These initiatives form part of the Municipality’s ongoing commitment to creating and maintaining a safe, healthy, and legally compliant workplace for all employees.
