Councillor Nqaba Bhanga nominated DA Mayoral Candidate for Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality

Today I humbly accept the DAโ€™s nomination of me as its mayoral candidate for the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro in the upcoming Local Government Elections. This is indeed a great honour.

Iโ€™ve seen the social inequalities that the people of Nelson Mandela Bay are confronted with due to more than two decades of ANC government. Addressing these inequalities is the compass that guides and motivates me to continue to serve the people of Nelson Mandela Bay.

Until we have redressed poverty and unemployment, I cannot fold my arms and watch a match that I am supposed to be playing.

I commit myself fully to this mayoral campaign and cannot wait to travel to all corners of our beautiful city to engage with all residents.

This campaign will be demanding but I will not falter and will speak to all our people as their current and future mayor.

My vision is to return NMB to its rightful place as the economic powerhouse of the province. We will strive to return quality service delivery to the Metro, by clamping down on corruption and maladministration within the municipality. We will create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive and address unemployment. We will make our communities safer to ensure a better life for all.

Since returning to government in December 2020 the DA and its coalition partners have made great strides in turning around the destruction brought to the city by the ANC-led Coalition of Corruption.

We have fixed leaks, streetlights, and our roads. We have acted against corruption, passed a service delivery-focused budget, we are cleaning the city and we have been putting plans in place to address our water crisis.

But we need to do much more, hard work lies ahead and I am ready to work every day to ensure that we keep making progress and take NMB forward again.

Your current (and future) Mayor
Nqaba Bhanga

๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿš” Coalition of Good Governance welcomes arrests for corruption!

I note and welcome reports of the arrest of four former Nelson Mandela Bay municipal officials and three company directors. These arrests relate to the irregular awarding of a tender to Milongani Eco Consulting, with the accused facing charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering.

Former DA Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Athol Trollip, initiated the investigation into this dodgy deal in March 2017. The investigation discovered that the tender, awarded in 2015, was no more than a municipal cash cow through which about R25.6-million of ratepayersโ€™ money was funneled.

These arrests come on the back of an update I provided on 27 July 2021 regarding Internal Audit reports and actions being taken to tackle corruption and bring back good governance in Nelson Mandela Bay. When I was elected as Executive Mayor in December 2020 I made a firm and unwavering commitment to stamping out corruption in Nelson Mandela Bay. I made it very clear that the coalition of good governance would hold the administration, municipal officials and politicians to the highest standard and would not tolerate any impropriety.

The Metroโ€™s Internal Audit department are currently investigating 153 cases of possible irregular contracts, 16 of which have been referred to them since I took office, many emanating from my Office. A number of these cases are also under investigation by law enforcement agencies โ€“ and the coalition of good governance will ensure that the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality cooperates and provides all information required.

During the period of 2016 โ€“ 2018 when the DA and its Coalition Partners governed Nelson Mandela Bay - dodgy deals were stopped in their tracks - those days are back!

Let's join hands and save water

In the midst of a devastating drought and dam levels that are dropping in Nelson Mandela Bay โ€“ we all need to play our part to save water. Conserving the water that we do have will buy us time until our water augmentation projects such as Nooitgedagt come online later this year. Together we can beat dry taps!

Let's avoid going without water for days

The newly implemented water restrictors might not be everyone's favourite invention but a necessary device to prevent households from going without water for days on end. Collectively we can beat dry taps.
