STATEMEMT ON 70 YEARS SINCE THE WOMEN’S MARCH: THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES

The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) KwaZulu-Natal joins millions of South Africans in commemorating Women’s Day and 70 years since the historic Women’s March of 09 August 1956, when thousands of courageous women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the oppressive pass laws.

The women of 1956 demonstrated thi power of organised women in confronting injustice and changing the course of history. Their courage, determination and unity remain an enduring reminder that freedom is not simply inherited; it must be defended, deepened and transformed into a better life for all.

Seventy years later, however, the struggle for the emancipation of women remains unfinished. Women continue to bear the disproportionate burden of unemployment, poverty, gender-based violence and femicide, economic exclusion, unequal access to opportunities and under-representation in decision-making structures.

The struggle has changed form, but its fundamental demand remains unchanged bevause women must have dignity, economic independence, equal opportunity, representation and meaningful power to shape the societies in which they live.

As the country gears towards the Local Government Elections, SANCO KZN believes that women’s representation in municipalities, community structures and political leadership must be significantly strengthened. Women must not merely be mobilised as voters, they must be candidates, councillors, community leaders, entrepreneurs, professionals and decision-makers.

SANCO KZN therefore welcomes and supports the ANC Women’s League programme, particularly its focus on advancing economic and entrepreneurial opportunities for women. We believe that women’s economic empowerment must move beyond programmes and declarations on paper and translate into tangible opportunities, including access to markets, public procurement, finance, skills development, land, technology, infrastructure and sustainable enterprises.

Local government has a particularly important role to play in creating conditions in which women-owned businesses can thrive. Municipalities must ensure that procurement opportunities are accessible, transparent and responsive to women entrepreneurs, particularly those operating in townships, rural communities and informal settlements.

SANCO KZN further calls upon government, municipalities, the private sector, development-finance institutions and progressive organisations to work together to create an enabling environment in which women can build sustainable enterprises, create employment and participate meaningfully in the local economy.

We must also intensify the fight against gender-based violence and femicide, which continues to undermine the safety, dignity and freedom of women and girls. The emancipation of women cannot be separated from their right to live free from violence, intimidation and abuse.

As we honour the women of 1956, SANCO KZN calls upon the women and men of South Africa to ensure that the next generation of women does not have to march for opportunities and rights that should already be guaranteed.

From the women who marched against pass laws in 1956, to the women building economic freedom and shaping their communities in 2026, the struggle continues.

SANCO KZN wishes all women a meaningful and empowering Women’s Day.
