Iphithi Nature Reserve A nature sanctuary in the heart of leafy Gillitts. 2 km walking path; popular with birders.

Iphithi Nature Reserve is a 12ha reserve in the heart of the leafy suburb of Gillitts. A small stream runs through it, creating a picturesque wildlife dam at the top end and a natural wetland at the lower end of the reserve. A mix of habitats can be enjoyed from thicket to woodland, stream, forest and wetland. It is a very popular bird watching spot, and blue duiker, bushbuck and mongoose make the

ir home here. A series of pathways meander around the reserve including a boardwalk across the wetland. Grassed areas around the dam can used for picnics, and a small gazebo and deck are available at the top of the reserve for a braai or for those not wishing to walk down to the dam.

Here are all the photos Steve Woodhall took at the Froggy Evening last night (21 Feb 2026). It was great fun even if we had rain at the start. The new 'three zone' plan meant there was more stream frontage for people to access besides the dam. And using the car park for activities meant more space for all. Enjoy and share with your friends!

iPhithi is looking great in the run up to https://www.facebook.com/events/957585190292734! Plenty of birds, butterflies and dragonflies as well as frogs. The weather was great today and the BMS transect walk yielded 75 butterflies from 23 species.

A challenge to nature photographers - we need more bird records on iNaturalist. Someone needs to get a decent photo of the Emperor Swallowtails that occasionally swoop along the streams!
