Municipal Institute of Learning MILE is a knowledge management initiative of eThekwini Municipality

The Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE), which is being run as a five-year pilot programme, has the following strategic objectives:
1.To facilitate the enhancement of professional and technical capacity of local government professionals on the African continent;
2.To position the eThekwini Municipality as a platform for innovating, learning and sharing with other municipalities, associations a

nd networks, both locally and internationally;
3.To leverage partnerships with tertiary institutions in order to promote collaborative research programmes that will ultimately improve the effectiveness of local government;
4.To provide a municipal technical support service to other municipalities in an empowering and innovative manner; and
5.To co-ordinate the internal knowledge management agenda within the eThekwini Municipality.

📍 Provincial Red Tape Reduction Workshop | Northern Cluster

MILE facilitated the Provincial Red Tape Reduction Workshop hosted yesterday at the Umkhanyakude District Council Chambers in Mkuze, under the theme: "Digital Transformation in Local Government."

The workshop brought together key stakeholders to explore innovative approaches to modernising public sector service delivery, reducing administrative barriers, and leveraging digital solutions to improve citizen experiences.

Facilitated by Ms Buyi Jaca, Programme Manager at MILE, participants engaged in interactive discussions, presentations, and a practical Citizen Persona Journey Mapping exercise aimed at identifying operational challenges and opportunities for digital service improvement from a citizen's perspective.

🌍 A Partnership for a More Sustainable Future

A new chapter in international collaboration begins as eThekwini Municipality and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) sign a Memorandum of Understanding to advance environmental governance, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

The agreement was signed by UNITAR Director of the Division for People and Social Development, Mr Alexander A. Mejia, and eThekwini EThekwini Municipalityity Mayor, Honourable Councillor Cyril Xaba, during Mr Mejia’s today at Durban City Hall.

Through the Green Helmets Project, this partnership will empower young people, community leaders, and municipal officials with the knowledge and practical skills needed to address climate change, protect the environment, and build more resilient communities. The initiative aligns with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and will promote training, innovation, and collaboration to create lasting local impact.

Together, we are investing in people, partnerships, and a greener future for generations to come.
