EThekwini Municipality Mayor Councillor, Cyril Xaba, welcomed Portuguese Ambassador to South Africa, His Excellency Carlos Costa Neves, and his delegation to the City to discuss areas of collaboration between eThekwini and various cities in Portugal.

During the meeting, Mayor Xaba announced plans to relocate the statue of Portuguese writer and poet Fernando Pessoa, from the Central Business District (CBD) to the Durban Botanic Gardens.

The high-level engagement focused on preserving shared cultural heritage and exploring strategic areas of socio-economic collaboration between Durban and Portuguese cities.

In addition to the cultural heritage discussion, Mayor Xaba and Ambassador Costa Neves agreed to explore formal sister city partnerships between the City of Durban and the Portuguese cities of Lisbon or Porto.
